As overplayed as it is...I wish we could play it......I really really really love that music. *walks away in despair with music written and arranged by Key Poulan in hand*

(by the way...that's not disrespect to Key....awesome music)

Except maybe SVC '88 . Personally I liked the '88 show better, but apparently the judges disagree with me. I was disappointed in '89 to see SCV was repeating the same show concept.
In the early '90's Phantom was done by a lot of bands around central Florida. What surpised me was no high schools did Les Miserables or Miss Saigon (at least to my knowledge).

AMEN! Don't get me wrong, '89 was incredible but '88 had it beat in my opinion. I saw '88 and '89 at finals and '88 seemed like it was performed with more passion. '89 was more precise though, I'd say. Personally, I like how SCV kind of keeps a hold of Phantom and whips it out for surprises....like at Tour of Champions last year ('04). The whipped it out as their on-field warm-up in San Jose.

Phantom was overdone in/around Tennessee from about '89 on for the next few years too. I was surprised as well that Les Mis or Miss Saigon wasn't used much, if at all. I've always wanted to hear someone really take on Miss Saigon. I wasn't too happy with a lot of SCV's '91 show. Thought it was weak in parts.

We are doing Miss Saigon this year. about 6 or 7 years ago we did Les Miserables. Saigon is not a hard show, and it sounds pretty good on the field too.

^^True, true. We're playing "The Rise and Fall of Rome." It's so awesome. Our music scores are fat.

I can't remember the name of the band...Open Class, PA...Harborcreek, maybe? They're doing Phantom. They did it pretty well, but it's still no SCV. I can't wait to see our winter percussion music for it, though. Tim Stodd is an arranging genius.

Much agreed. Sadly, though, every school I think has tried it at one point or another. We're doing it this year, and its like "OH EM GEE! PHANTOM OF THE OPERA IS AWESOME" coming from the rest of the band and the band parents, and even some classmates, but its so overrused. If people want to make a show out of a movie, go original, or at least very awesome and popular movies. Dont get me wrong, PotO kicks a$$age, really, but its not all that popular in movie terms. Something like star wars or lord of the rings, or even harry potter (*cringes at thought of how cheesy that could become*) would be cool. But I never saw the movie/musical of PotO until I found out htats what our show was. Its like I said, overused.

Yea, one of the smaller bands of my area is doing it. And to put this in the nicest terms possible...they slaughtered it.
