dicipline has to be secured the very first day you meet the line you're in. My school is only 5 years old and before this year. we didn't have anyone take iniciative more than 2 days before band camp. The section leaders didn't show that they were leaders ever either. if you want to get people to listen get your section leader get him or her to start making people do push-ups if they don't listen it worked for me. Other than that dicipline starts before band camp, the previous school year.

I don't know these people, so I'm talking from what I read ... It's hard. It's easy when people know that tingly feeling in your stomach after an amazing show ... or heck, even an exercise that sounded really good. You can't explain it to them, because they'll think you're a complete nerd, because they have no respect for anyone. I'd suggest putting time into them, telling them that they ARE worth something, your time, your effort, their effort ... Tell them that the stuff that they're learning is all them. There isn't another person in the entire world that could march your show with their dots, their notes, their energy. Make them feel special, like "yeah, there IS a reason I'm here." You need them. Sometimes that's all that people need ... to be needed.

Honestly, if they aren't listening to your captain, then there is a serious problem. But I agree with Cadet. If they truly don't enjoy it like you do, then you can't force them to. It's that simple. It's not your place to say "you must enjoy this and want to do this as much as I do." And honestly, that is the biggest flaw and weakness to the majority of high school lines. Also, physical punishment isn't the best option. That only discourages them, and as I said before, it's not your place to punish them for something they don't want to do. Once again, that's the sad part behind high school drumlines. If you are serious about getting something done, sit them down and talk to them. Find out why they don't care or aren't having fun, etc. Communication is the best way to take care of business on a high school level. Also, try making things a little more fun. The discipline should still be there; but, if they are not having fun, then what is the point for them to be there? It is high school after all. Good luck.
