Anonymous Unregistered	this is my first year playing cymbals and i can read music really well ... but the other 4 cymbal player cant read music(even the captain)... one of the other cymbal players dont wanna listen and learn he says idk what im doing and he dont play anything right ... im trying to make us sound good but no one wants to help... does anyone have some suggestions i really need help

Just stay on them yell at them, give push ups and have talks with them. Tell them what you think. If that doesn't work maybe tell the drumline captain, drum major or the Dand director to talk to them. And if that doesnt work........GOOD LUCK. If that doesn't work tell your drum major that the cymbals are going to screw up and make the WHOLE band and drum line sound bad. Negative reinforcement is not a way to go with new kids, it only leads to people not wanting to do it and bad attitudes and eventually quitting. Stay calm and just sit them down and tech them, don't get frustrated, music isn't exactly easy for all people. You have to understand that if your looking at a piece of music and you don't understand something and people scream at you for not knowing, that's wrong. Now after you teach them how to read music and they get it down, and then for some reason start crapping the bed in the middle of the season, then you can give pushups and stuff. cymbalman Registered: 05/30/03	Exactly right! Show them the way and treat them with care. Make them feel good about accomplishments and they will want to learn more. Best way to get them to learn fast is to teach a person and then have that person show the others. Well they are all loving playing cymbals now! They didnt want to play at first after they understood they had to learn the parts they started talking about visuals. Anonymous Unregistered	Cymbal players read music fine if anything it's way too easy to screw up. It's just some of the visuals thrown in screw us up. Except when it's like an easy stand tune those are way too easy to screw up
