If you could be in any drumline over the past 25 plus years which would it be? Explain why.

For me it would be 1990 Blue Devils. That line was men among boys. Combination of dudes that could really drum as well as an off the wall book. You know you're in a good line when guys from the pit can strap on a set of quads and play what the rest of the line.

My second choice is a tie between 1992 SCV and 1980 Spirit of Atlanta. '92 SCV was an "all-star" drumline. As far as '80 Spirit goes just listen to a recording, it says it all plus they had 11 snares.

hm.... that's a toughie. '95 Cavies would definitely be awesome. And I would've loved to have marched SCV '89, not cuz the line was outstanding, or because the book was insane, but because seeing a video of them from that year at finals is what got me into DCI in the first place. It would be awesome to have played in that line, to me at least.

I'd have to say Vanguard '87 (because it's Russian X-Mas), or Cavaliers '96 (they were just cool).

I would have to say '99 Cadets, so I could have pulled a Michael 'Fetus' Terry and march for 6+ years (as he is currently doing). Seeing the Cadets in 1999 was my first drum corps experience. Ever since, I have been a drum corps nut. I have listened further back by purchasing the Cadets 80's and 90's anthology CDs, and I have found that I really love their style. Something indescribable hits me when I hear the sound of their hornlines, or the drumlines playing during the ballad. The Cadets move me like no other, and I finally realized it this year. The lines of '99 and '00 just really made an impression on me.

Other than that , my list is as follows for the past 25 years:
SCV '80-81, Bridgemen '82, Cadets '83-87, BD '88, Cadets '89, BD '90, Cavaliers '91, SCV '92, Star '93, Cavaliers '94, Cadets '95, Phantom '96, Cadets '97-98, SCV '99, and Cadets '00-'05.

I'm going to include Cadets '06 and '07 as well, as '07 is my age-out and I hope to be marching it in a maroon uniform

OK for me its hard. Star from 89-93. Cadets in 85(you go GarfCadet) or 91 with the huge tenor line in the begining. SCV in 78, 87, 91, 92. VK in 87-95. The top Contenders are:
Any VK line. Especialy the 94 tenor line wow.
Then Star in 89 or 91(91 not because they won mind you).
Last SCV 92.
Runners up are BD 88 and 90
27th Lancers from 78 or 80
91 or 92 Crossmen(and that year they had like 8 million man bass line)
And a random choice here is Crown in 95. It must have been magical to make finals for the first time.

I've only been into Drumline stuff for about 2 years now so I haven't really been able to see that much, but from what I've seen so far I would have to say '04 Blue Devils or '05 Cavies. Those guys are just cool.

Bridgmen, any year the Dennis DeLucia taught. His lines actually played rudiments in the show and had a great time doing it. I think learning from him would have been a great experience.

Almost any of the Blue Devils lines of the 80's. I always thought they had really fun and challenging books. Also, Cadets 89, especially that bass line.

Dennis teaches the Rutgers University line... It's certainly an experience, it's great playing in a line of his.

As for a line I wish I could have been in I have to say SCV 1992. They played Fiddler on the Roof that year and though the came in 7th, it was a really powerful show with some really awesome drum licks. Fiddler was a really horn and pit heavy show, but it still must have been awesome to play. In my opinion, it's the most dynamic show of all-time DCI.

Im pretty content with the drumlines I was in (VK 93 and 94) but if I could have marched in any line, I would say the Cadets of Bergen County in 1992. The show overall was an amazing show, but IMO one of the most underated shows and drumlines in DCI history. Everyone thinks of Cavies and their powerful drumline, but this Cadets line was incredible. A precursor to the amazing 93 drumline. My personal favorite was the bass section, which contained friends of Rob and mine: Saajad and Vince. Isn't that right Rob? I know Saajad was in the 92 bass line, but wasn't Vince as well? Or just 93?

Anyways, 1992 Cadets of Bergen County. "To Tame the Perilous Skies".... amazing show and drum book

Bernie: Sajjad was in the '92-93 line. Vince only marched '93. In '92 Vince was marrching bottom for SCV. Speaking of SCV '92, that was indeed an awesome line. Back then it was an "all-star" drumline. They played crazy stuff and they always won the parking lot.

Unfortunately I've not seen or heard Garfield '86 in a long time so I can't really give you an impression. My only recollection from their '86 show were raincoats, "On the Water Front" and a ton of horns. Maybe I'll make '86 my first Legacy DVD purchase.

2000 Cadets. I'd love to have been on that tenor line, just for the solo in "Adventure." We watched that video during band camp...The whole band was just in awe. I loved it.
Also, the '93 Cadets had an awesome line, as well. I have their solo downloaded, and it gives me the chills.

If he means the pit when referring to the Star 1993 percussion "section", then I could agree Rob. While they did not have the beefy, meaty runs of old, they certainly had the most "concert" style approach to writing and playing.

I would say any line that was taught by Fred Sanford. When I was a kid and just starting out in this world of drum corps. I went to a Yamaha clininc in Madison and he was running it.

That weekend changed my life forever. If I only had a third of his knowledge and experince I would be a better instructor.

They'd said that the staff would actually openly talk very negatively of other corps, playing Star up as so much better than everyone else. Lord knows, they LIVED better than most! haha

Glassmen '01 - Sweet, sweet, sweet book, insanely clean beats, and taught by McNutt, who is the MAN.
Blue Knights '95 - Some very tasty stuff.
Star '93 - I mean, seriously, come on... this doesn't even need to be explained.

I must admit, last year, both Madison and Phantom were laying down some pretty great stuff battery-wise, too.

One more year that'd be pretty awesome to be in would be Vanguard '98, with the Copland music. The "Hear Ye!" section where the tenor dance around then have a rack solo is pretty awesome, as well as some nice exposed sweep patterns. Then there was the nice snare solo in there as well.

I would have to say forget about DCI on this one and I would choose to march with one of those real throwback fife and drum bands. They had THE cleanest rudiments I ever heard in my life! They were the pioneers of all of it so If I could march with ANY line I would choose one of those.

Bridgemen '83 Tri-Tom line I believe . . . Black Market Juggler . . . 'nuff said.

Blue Devil's '94, '95, '96 Tenorline. . . That is chopped up drumming at it's finest. I mean, the visuals were incredible . . . It looked like it was mechanical. And the chops they had . . . Just WOW.

Cadet's '95 Tenorline . . . Or was it '96? One of those two.

Boston '02. Just an incredible show, and incredible Drumline. And '03, also. Whenever they did Bravo. Tenorline.

'95 Crown, the magic of making finals for the first time in a corps history has really got to be something to experience

'92 X-Men, those Premiers really did sing with Mark Thurston with the reigns

'86-'87 Bushwackers, Man those guys had some hands...

The more I think about it, the more I agree with RBassVK. Scary, huh?

The 1990 Blue Devils book had to be a blast to play -- especially the drum feature -- and those guys threw down some notes. (That was my first year in drum corps and I played bass in the Blue Devil B Corps. I was lucky enough to hear them over and over and over and...)

1972 Kingsmen. Wouldn't it be cool to be the first DCI champion, marching in the same snare line as Float and Hardimon?

1986 Suncoast Sound bass line. It says something that people still talk about 'em 20 years later even though the corps doesn't exist anymore.

1980 Spirit of Atlanta. For that matter, pick just about any line Tom Float ever stood in front of.

I think the only thing I disagree on is '92 SCV. Nothing against the guys in the line, but Fiddler on the Roof just didn't do anything for me. Personally, I'd rather have been in SCV in '91. I remember seeing them at the Concord Pavilion show before the season and thinking that they were gonna win drums that year. They were that good that early.

I agree. Great guys on the '92 line, but I did not like that show at all.

I am a big Phantom Regiment fan, but I really like the SCV lines. I like what Jim Casella has done with his drumlines.

Star '93 - The show speaks for itself.
SCV '03, '04 - Casellas writing was so musical and fit so well.
