What hybrid rudiments, in your opinion, give you endurance, speed, and volume chops over an extended period of time doing them?

Obviously different rudiments tax the muscles in different ways, but I wouldn't generally be of the mindset that one should attempt to build "endurance, speed, and volume chops" by playing various hybrids for an extended period of time.

Take Flam-Fives for example. Playing them for an extended period of time over and over is ultimately going to give you better endurance on flam-fives (and possible better endurance in general), and better speed on flam-fives, but that won't necessarily translate to better speed on everything else - though any hybrid related to the flam-five (like the cheeses in triplet feel) will benefit.

I think for overall endurance, and overall speed, you stick with the basics:
Endurance Chops - put on a CD and roll at various tempos and intensities for the duration of the cd (approx 45 min). This does wonders for building both endurance and volume, since the same types of muscle fibers are used for both.

Speed Chops - nothing builds speed like legato singles, but you'll also really want to burn on accent/tap exercises too. And try this: play a ton of 3's on each hand and push for speed, BUT DO NOT lift the stick more than 3" (use tap height). This will force your fingers to work harder to pull the 2nd and 3rd rebounds out since gravity can't help you out much. And don't get sloppy with it or you're wasting your time!

So, this was a long-winded way of just saying that you should not rely on the hybrids to build speed or endurance and expect it to have a general performance benefit on other stuff since often the muscle fibers used in executing many hybrids develop specialized "muscle memory" that simply won't apply to other rudiments directly. You get more bang for the buck with the fundamentals ultimately.

Again, let me say thanks to Garf on that info because I know I'm not the only one who needs to learn from a forum like this. It's easier for me to talk to you than it is to let's say my drumline's arranger and his techies. They are never around and I'm in the Pit, so I usually work independent from my fellow friends on the Line. I definitely have the chops, but I have to apply that info to extend my talents and to make sure I don't do something real stupid. I've never had and hope to avoid tendonitus. All those stories I've heard and the people that got their percussive careers ruined...

I take it that quality is always to be emphasized over quantity. I know that's a fact because we had a snare drummer with great endurance and speed chops, yet he had terrible volume and brain chops. He went to tryout for the 2001 Cadets thinking he had a good chance yet when he returned, he seemed to care less about the constructive criticism he received based on his consistent use of 9"-12" stick heights. When I get the chance to tryout for the 2004 Cadets, I hope not to make the same mistake with the timpani. I find the comments professionals give me are the only way to perfect a piece or even those basic fundamentals.

Welcome to Drumlines.org fellow Marylander! I'm glad you're learning, but please edit your post instead of adding another post right after one you just made. It just makes things easier to follow for everyone else. You have 30 minutes to edit a post once you make it. And again, Welcome!
