If there has been a topic for this I must have missed it. I was wondering if there are such things as exercises for marking time. Sometimes it can be confusing playing a certain part and having your feet alternate to keep time. So just like there are rudimental exercises for breaking down a part you want to play, I was wondering if there are any for marking time.

Yes, the Cavies have an exercise called "Foot Torture" that has 16th notes then triplets in different accented patterns the help your feat feel the beat better.

An easier exercise we use is called honeycomb or 16th note grid. Its as follows:
\Rlrl Rlrl Rlrl Rlrl\rLrl rLrl rLrl rLrl\rlRl rlRl rlRl rlRl\rlrL rlrL rlrL rlrL\ x2
\Rlrl Rlrl rLrl rLrl\rlRl rlRl rlrL rlrL\ x2
\Rlrl rLrl rlRl rlrL\Rlrl rLrl rlRl rlrL\R

this is played with the repeats but no pauses in between them, staight through from the 1st note to the last ..those are all sixteenth notes. the lower case are taps the upper case are Accents. email me with any ??S

Oh, prestonsnare I remember that one well. A great excercise. Another variation on that would be to do it with triplets. 4 accents on the first, than second, than third of each triplet. Than 2 accents on each than one accent each.

Rlr Lrl Rlr Lrl | rLr lRl rLr lRl | rlR lrL rlR lrL
Rlr Lrl rLr lRl | rlR lrL Rlr Lrl | rLr lRl rlR lrL
Rlr lRl rlR Lrl | rLr lrL Rlr lRl | rlR Lrl rLr lrL |R

Another pretty good test of you marking time is an excersise called 5-7-10.

5/8:RrRrr|RrRrr|LlLll|LlLll|7/8:RrRrRrr|RrRrRrr|LlLlLll|LlLlLll|10/8:RrRrRrrRrr|RrRrRrrRrr|LlLlLllLll|LlLlLllLll||

That's a little challenging to keep in step with.

Try marking time to triplet grid. Thats one of the hardest things out there to mark time too.
