Use either Double Beat, Roll Generator, or Dudets. These are all very good choices.

Our old exercise was called chicken and a roll

Chicken and a Roll is a good exercise too, if you can find it.

Edited for double post.

For a basic pattern just work with this

Do the pattern with your right hand once, then with your left and repeat. this is a very basic double exercise but it works.

i love that one & coming from a non-perc to first year bass line bass1, it really does help a lot.

the first thing is not to look at doubles as doubles but to think of them as a two eighth notes with less space between them in the relative pattern. if you think of them as doubles than more then likely you will crush them or play them incorrectly. i also don't like the playing on a pillow thing. i understand the theory behind but i don't think that it will help your technique as much. your muscles will gradually build up over time so first learn the proper way to play and then just play for extended periods of time on a drum. THERE IS NO SUBSTITUTION FOR PLAYING ON A DRUM(im not yelling its just for reference). im sure your instructor or BD will not mind staying after for you to practice. Also this is probably one of the most important things. Practice with a met. Practice with a met. Everybody say it with me. Practice with a met. This so important for developing your internal pulse with a certain pattern that way if you are playing it incorrectly then you can say ohh wait i am rushing or dragging and you can fix it and eventually you will be able to play in time without a met. Remember always practice with a met, a mirror, and a friend.
