the first thing is not to look at doubles as doubles but to think of them as a two eighth notes with less space between them in the relative pattern. if you think of them as doubles than more then likely you will crush them or play them incorrectly. i also don't like the playing on a pillow thing. i understand the theory behind but i don't think that it will help your technique as much. your muscles will gradually build up over time so first learn the proper way to play and then just play for extended periods of time on a drum. THERE IS NO SUBSTITUTION FOR PLAYING ON A DRUM(im not yelling its just for reference). im sure your instructor or BD will not mind staying after for you to practice. Also this is probably one of the most important things. Practice with a met. Practice with a met. Everybody say it with me. Practice with a met. This so important for developing your internal pulse with a certain pattern that way if you are playing it incorrectly then you can say ohh wait i am rushing or dragging and you can fix it and eventually you will be able to play in time without a met. Remember always practice with a met, a mirror, and a friend.
