You could also do some of the excersise= 2 beats of 16ths then 2 beats of roll, repeat, then 4 beats of 16ths then 4 beats of roll. At my school, we call it "chicken in a bowl".

Funny, we used to use that exercise at my school, except we called it "Chicken in a Roll".

I wouldn't use a roll excerise to work on doubles. Double Beat would help alot a lot more stroke wise than a roll ex. would.

Doubles get progressively harder the lower the Bass is, due to the fact that the higher pitched drums are stretched more, giving them bounce. Try a single on the lowest bass you have and a single on 1st. You'll see the difference.

THe most important thing is not to lose your technique while you're playing doubles - It took me forever to get them down and im I'm still working on it. Use it or lose it. Practice on pillows and just start slow and speed up, then slow and speed up. If you can't feel it, you aren't doing it long enough - Or use a Vic Practice pad and the back of your mallots mallets. I can easily do doubles on the top 2 basses -my bass is 3rd so it's just a little more difficult - But on 5th - as heavy as the mallots mallets are and as little rebound as you get, it gets hard.

Don't forget triple beat--it's like swinging 3 bats to warm up: so much easier to play double strokes when you work triple strokes to death.

(For anyone who doesn't know, triple beat is 2 sixteenths and an 8th on a hand, ending with two 8ths, like this:
RRR RRR RRR R R LLL LLL LLL L L, rinse, repeat)

A-B-C!!! haha Doesn't everyone play these patterns in warm-up?

we call the first pattern shown 'A'
and then the second 'B'
we also have 'C' which is just moving the 8th note to the front of the measure.

Whats even better than that is quintuple beat... its in 6/4, and the hands go like RRRRR RRRRR RRRRR RRRRRRR/LLLLL LLLLL LLLLL LLLLLL/ and repeat... if you can play that well, then you can not only play doubles very well, but also triples and quadruples!

Why not just have the bass line play single stroke rolls instead of double stroke rolls. If one bass drummer isn't where the rest of the bass drummers are in terms of rolling then have them play down instead. My school's bass line never doubles and it tends to sound crisper and cleaner. Then again we have a terrible bass line.

Our old exercise was called chicken and a roll
