i been playin timpani for 4+ years for both orchestra and marching band and im goin into my senior year. i joined Surf in the fall but had to quit because of time management wth all my other activities. i desperately want to join a core though and i was thinking about Crossmen cymbal line. so what my question is where should i begin and are there any excercises that i should do to get ready for that? or do Xmen have a certain technique that i should learn?

thanks

If you really want to march corps, you'll have to make time for it. You wont be able to march any corps if your other "activities" take priority over a corps practice. Unless you're part of an independent indoor drumline (some corps offer flexibility around indoor schedules), you'll need to be more committed. Either way, hopefully I'll see you next year in the cymbal audition room

If you want to learn how to play like the Crossmen, go to http://www.americandrum.com/catalog/accessories/video.html

in addition to whats already been suggested (all very good ideas), i would have to say go audition, keep an open mind, have a positive attitude, don't miss any camps or rehersals, unless you absolutely must and if so make sure to let your instructors know why, make sure you have memorized your parts by the next camp. i think most corps look for a positive attitude, a good work ethic, and the ability to apply what you've learned.

There is no doubt that the Crossmen have a technique that you should definitely learn in and out. Be aware, however, that someone cannot expect to show up at a camp and make the line because they are trying out on cymbals. I'm not saying that you disrespect the instrument, but just make sure you go in there like you've been playing them your whole life. Attitude is key, and if you are already familiar with the technique, you'll have a much better chance of making it.

If you want another alternative, the Jersey Surf uses the exact same technique as the Crossmen line. If you don't make it, try out for Surf next year and learn the technique and then try out for Crossmen the next year (if you still want to ).

Raven has a good point. I've had people in my lines who knew nothing about cymbals, but because they had the right attitude and they did what they were told. Personally, i'll take someone who is smart and who can follow directions especially if they don't know the technique program.

Also, Jersey Surf does have an excellent cymbal program. That is a corps to be wreckoned (SP?) with this year. Probably their best year ever in my opinion.

Just my two cents.
