IMO, going to the chiropractor or taking (legal) drugs is going around the problem. Two things are possible: 1- The harness fits your in correctly. If you have Pearl equipment like my school, it's probably sucky and might be broke. Find a model online and make sure yours looks exactly like a new one does. My harness for indoor was a 'Frankenstien' harness, made of two extremely broke ones, and it broke at finals for a WGI regional... not fun when your playing bass 5. 2- You aren't strong enough. Now, I don't mean to be mean at all, but some people are more in shape than others. As chompchomp stated, stretch. It's the best thing you can do to make it easier.

Don't worry about it, dude. This is my first year Marching, and I'm playing Tenors as well. Just don't get scared. I used to never exercise, and I used to hunch over when I walked. Marching Band'll fix you right up real quick. The last thing you should do is get scared because of some drum/s. YOU march the drums, the Drums don't march you. You'll get used to the Tenors, even without a back brace (I did.). I suggest doing sit-ups and squats regularly.
(Toe, if you read this . . . stfu. )

I totally agree on the sucky harnesses (we go to the same school, and his drum was like hanging off of the harness). A good harness would help a lot, because it would actually be made correctly.
I never actually had a problem on bass drum with back pain. Maybe just a little with bass 3 because I was tiny in 9th grade, and the harnesses were bad. Now on snare I am having major back pain. I mean it could be that I am a girl and the vest harnesses suck for girls with a top, but it must sit on a nerve or something and hurts my whole left leg and my back. I fix that by just taking some hardcore ibeprophen before practice everyday. A massage never hurts either .

Put your hands on your knees and spreadem then bend over and let the back of your harness rest on your shoulder blades but let the drum hang....

Back pain is horrible. I went from playing cymbals to first bass, from last year to this year, so I wasn't even ready for the weight of a bass drum. I'm only 5'0'', and pretty skinny, so carrying it was interesting. Our harnesses are really, really old (for whatever reason, tenors and snares got new harnesses three years ago when we got new Pearl drums, but the bass harnesses are from the last set of white ones, and are XL Lite somethingorother's, and incredibly uncomfortable) and don't fit well. But I eventually got over the pain by just getting used to it. I tend to take the drum off every so often and roll my shoulders and it provides a temporary relief. I don't know if I'm weird or what, but I 'prefer' the back pain to the pain in my arms I had from cymbals. That was totally not fun.

I think the only pain you should feel on your back should be similar to your hands after a chop exercise. They should feel tired, but no sharp pains, and they should be sore for a few minutes after you stop. Any pain other than that, such as a sharp stinging pain or pain like someone has punched you should not be there if you have correct posture and good, working equipment. The muscle soreness should go away after a few weeks of good posture and workouts. Always stretch before and after tracking, or carrying your drums for a long time. If this doesn't eliminate back pain, then refit your harness to yourself and make it as snug as possible, to make the drums seem like an extension of your body. If none of this works, consult a doctor. BTW I got this info from my friend who marched corps, so it has some validity.

Same here. My school's harnesses dosnt have pads on the sholders! But i quickly found out that having good posture and dont make any weird movements in them the pain basicly goes away.

I would say take advil before and after a rehersal. It will make you sort of numb to the pain. Overall, you just need to tough it out and pretend its not there. Think about your drumming instead of your back pain. Thats what i usally do. You can block out most of the pain if you try really hard.

I ended up at the chiropractor with pulled ligaments so just be careful take pain meds strecth, take breaks if you need them. But dont let it get in your way, your mind is stronger ^_^ so concentrate on your playing and not on pain

Stretching is a big factor along with Ibuprophen. Most people don't stretch properly, you need to stretch and hold that stretch. How many stretches you do isn't as important as doing them properly and holding them. Motrin or Advil will help at the beginning of your season, taken before practice will knock down the inflamation and along with stretches and and correct posture, you can have a pleasurable show or practice. If its from muscle weakness, then you need some basic exercises in building the muscles that need the most help.

The pain never goes away, you just get used to it. Stretching, but not overdoing it, helps. Good posture and how the harness/drums sit on you play a big part in it too. Standing with a lean can cause pain and sometimes you don't know you're doing it, took me half a year to realize it my freshman year. Also, if the drums are too low on you, it will strain your back and cause pain (the way lifting heavy stuff all day could). Be sure you are marching right, as well. Also, it might be a good idea if you go to the doctor if the pain is getting unbearable and you've been marching a while. Scholiosis (sp?) can screw you up. Also, our top bass hurt her back really bad somehow (never found out how, sorry) but now she can't marching because of it. I remember seeing her as we marched off the field and the second the drums got off, she was in tears. If you are experiancing similar, you really need to go get that checked out. Like everyone seems to have stated, ADVIL HELPS!

http://www.cbass.com/Furey.htmI gurantee that the body bridge will help you if you are experiencing back pain. It strengthens you up like a mofo, and it only takes a couple minutes out of your day. You don't necessarily have to do the hindu squats or pushups along with it, but those would also help you to build overall fitness. GO FOR THE BODY BRIDGE!!!
