This year we ended our show with a 5 measure drum break. The line was in an arch right in the front while the band did some crazy fast drill. It was pretty cool.

I think that drum breaks in shows have the potential to be very good or equally bad. It all depends on how they're placed in the show. While I was in high school our drum breaks consisted of four measure solos for each section of the battery. In the mean time the band would be doing more complicated drill. Only one year was the band playing during the feature, but that was because the drum line was relatively new and need not be playing alone at any given point in the show.

So I say, use drum breaks wisely. If the drumline is relatively young and still learning, then the band should be playing at least at accented points in the feature. If the drumline is strong enough to go without the band playing, go for it.

We have a drum break that is the bridge between the first two songs of our show. No tapoffs, we just go right through. The beginning of the solo is the whole drumline playing, and the next part has just the snare and tenor capitans soloing. The drumline is split in half for a section, then we start adding players, and then we come together for the end. Complicated.

The solo is on www.putfile.com/bigcouch. It's called Mr. Bailey.

This year our line did a combination of park and blow and crazy drill. It was about a thirty measure long solo, so we had time to do park and blow and then crazy drill. Started out crazy drill and during that is when we had the snare and tenor features, and the tenors did these pretty crazy drill moves, and basses and snares did some that just looked cool and then we did an accelerando into the park and blow while we just stood in a line and "grooved" for about a good eight measures.

Park-'n'-blow (park an blow) n. A part in a show where you just stand there and play; no marching. Usually during the drum solo, or for dramatic effect.

For example, a cool thing I would like to do is take my snare line. We crab fast right in front of the band, then we park in blow a nice groove, and then take off crabbing again in the same direction as we were going before.

But that won't happen. Seeing as I'm the only one willing to do something like that on my line.

Drill yes, for a few pieces of music. Music, no, we don't make up our own.
