Split parts, with a line that can play them are fun as hell. But i guess im old school- a stickler for technique. a line of 10 people playing 18's and 20's all exicuting pristine technique is the coolest thing ever. to the untrained eye of some spectators they are taken aback. i have had more than one person who was watching our line warm up before a game come up to me and ask how i do [technique]. Also flips might be my favorite thing to do. Our line flips our cymbals up and down, thus they flash about but all at the same time.. I just love watching video or standing back and watching it happen its impressive.

I like flipping them in a wave like motion with the rest of the cymbal line. My line did that my freshman year and at every show when we did it the crowd went crazy!

When I played cymbals my freshman year, I liked to write all kinds of awesome visuals, plus I got to write a tag to the song "What Is Hip?"

Ummm... I'm a tenor player so I don't really know how to play very much on cymbals but I like doing slides.

I just started playing cymbals a lot more, and i remember watching my band teacher freshman year during a band concert, and he spun the cymbals against each other.. I dont even know what its called, but he got a sound almost like a suspended cymbal role out of them. Possibly the coolest thing i've seen thus far... then again I live in Vermont and we dont really have marching bands up here...

Actually, it's called a Vibrato Roll.

I guess that's true. But what if you were doing a two-plate roll? Is that the same as a vibrato roll or just "roll"? I don't know much about this stuff.

No problem. Hope you feel better. A two plate roll is when you slide the edges of the cymbals against each other where one cymbal goes around each other. It's very easy to do.
The Vibrato Roll is when you spin the edges of the cymbals. This requires wrist motion and take a bit work to learn.

Since our cymbal line is all girls, we get to sit on the ground while the rest of the drumline walks over us. Gets the judges at competition everytime

The drum line walks over you? Explain a little..
Anyway, my favorite sounds to make on cymbals are sizzles and punches.
Yeah well there are six of us and we all practically lie on the ground while the rest of the drumline walks over us. Not sure how I can explain that more...

i made up a visual last year. There was guard next to us and the sabres were stabbing our heads. the left cymbal moves up beside your head while the right goes down by your leg. you then "kick" the cymbal and flip it up it looks really cool and is fun to do if your bored

My drumline has only two cymbal players so during some parts of the show and during our parade piece. We hold for the 3 snare drums which sounds nice exp. on this one part were the snares play sixteeths on both cymbal and their snare.

The main thing I was ever taught was it doesn't matter how many flips, chucks, tings, taps, tongs, slides, sizzles, slams, sucks, hats, or different kinds of crashes you do nor does it matter if you're doing back flips over the guard in supposed unison and then front flips rippled over the tubas, without ridiculously almost insanely blood curdling perfection, they all aren't sh!t. A line that has no visuals but maxes out their technique will look far more impressive than a dirty visual filled line. My instructor back in the day once told me, "Cymbals are by nature the most visual musical instrument on the field at any given time. We don't necessairly need to do a pit viper every 2 seconds, just the super-cleanliness of our basic technique is impressive enough because we're all vibing and hitting the same angles and the glare from all of your cyms pops at the same time and it's a beautiful thing."
A good example is Vanguard. Yeah they do some bomb a$$ visuals. None of which require very much more knowledge or skill (besides the pit viper) But their intensity and super-cleanliness put them one step above the competition. That's why my favorite visual is piss clean technique, you can't have any other visuals be badass w/o it.

I think playing any sort of split double tap parts are fun. I also just like creating any of the special effect sounds like scrapes, sizzles, and even the weird ones like the cow-call.

hahaha we did cymbal toss our freshman year it was amazing but playing-wise sizzles are the best for sure unless you have an awesome cymbal line that can play sick splits

Split 32nd note taps are fun. omg you have to be a monster to pull that off i have to say i love the domino crash one person hits another, who hits another, and so on its really cool visually and its pretty easy oh yeah and my soph year we had sick cymbal spilts that were awsome untill the battery director told one kid not to play cuz he couldnt even handle marching so they just sounded awful cuz we couldnt cover his beats...=( boo

me and my fellow tenor both marched cymbals our rookie year. sometimes to joke around, we'll each get a pair of cymbals and split slides as fast as we can o.0.
and i might add in we'd make a kick but cymbal line me and him.
