My shins only hurt really bad after the weekend when I tried out for my first drum corp. I can still feel the pain . My whole leg muscles were locked they wouldnt move, it was like a 3 day charlie horse.

WELL YIS SIR!!! IT'S CALLED SHEEN SPLINTS, YOU NEED TO EITHER STRECH YOUR SHINS MORE, OR YOU NEED TO TIE YOUR SHINS WHEN MARCHING, NOT TOO TIGHT,OR JUST SACK UPAND RIDE IT OUT!!! HAHAH JUST KIDDING, BUT SERIOUSLY, STRETCH MORE BEFORE, LIKE ANY OTHER PHYSICAL ACTIVITY!!CATTDADDY OUT

sirchops.... don't use Caps lock. Now, I agree with the suggestion to stretch more often so you don't end up with a very screwed up walking style.

Shin splints can be fairly easy to get and hard to make go away. The best advice is to do a good stretch before you do marching, and then a little more after you are done to warm down.

it could be that your muscle is sore....yes there is muscle there. I'm not sure of the exact name but I found it out when I was looking for calf workouts...one of of the workouts was raising your toes in the air and then back down again repetatively...if you roll your feet well then you are getting this workout!

Yeah. Like everyone said, just stretch. Right over left (Standing; right leg crosses left leg, and you bend forward to touch your toes. hold for 10 seconds. Switch.). Pretzel stretch. Lower back stretch (Just incase). Drink a lot of milk and get some protein in your system to build up the muscle in your legs (Plus, your Chops will be HUGE.). Relax on the marching a bit. I would know. There's a hole in my left shin bone. No nerve or flesh or anything. Accidents happen.

I've gotten shin splits from running track in the spring. The best way to treat shin splits is to ice down your shins about 3 times a day. Put the ice on your shins for about fifteen minutes then take them off for a few minutes. Just repeat that and you should be fine.

Don't just stretch before and after marching, but also during breaks.
