When you just pull your heel up, you tend to hit the back of the beat rather than right on it. Especially during long roll exercises, the whole foot off the ground mark time really helps you feel the tempo.

...but heel looks better and like it has been mentioned you move around with whole foot...Whole foot just seems like you are stomping the ground, especially at fast tempos whereas with heel only you are actually doing something else.

i usually lift my whole foot but sometimes i catch myself only lifting my heel (mainly when i'm really tired)

We mark time with heel only. We started out marking time with the whole foot, but then we found that we moved around a lot, and the end snares would occasionally drift away from the line. Also it's much less of a stress factor at fast tempos so you can concentrate on the actualy playing.

im a fan of tracking personally, but when marking time comes around im a fan of heel up, but we do whole foot, im not quite sure which one works better. by opinion its just heel
