I think heel looks better, maybe that's because it's the only way I've ever marched.

Heel is more comfortable for me . In my corps we are doing a piece in 7/8 where the 8th note is at mm-184 . We mark time whole foot & I feel uncomfortable , though, I can find the beat better with whole foot , but I would have to say heel.

I did whole foot. I've done both, but I find whole foot better for my preference.

my personal preference is heel.

i have a funny story about using all foot...when i was auditioning for SCVC bass, they didnt have a stand for the top bass, so we used it on the harness. when i would begin using my foot instead of my heel, i would slowly start to walk forward...i almost ran into one of the snares.

My school does it with just heels. We only make people who can't get the beat pick up their whole foot.

My college line and the lines I instruct use the whole foot method.

The reasoning behind it is that when you only move your heel, your upper body stays still; the beat is only in your feet.

But when using the whole foot, your whole upperbody moves ever so slightly thus transfering the beat through the whole body.

We use the whole foot now. At the beginning of percussion week, we used the heel, then once we got that we moved on to the whole foot, being careful to stay in the same spot we started at. It's crazy how far you'll move with the whole foot. We somehow managed to move an entire 2 feet forward just after 5 minutes of warmup. That's behind us now it's good to be better.

If we're going to move immediately after marking(Like say we're warming up with a basics block) then it's whole foot. It'd be 8 to 5, mark 4, 8 to 5, mark 4, etc.

If we're just doing it stand still, then it's just the heel.

I would use the heel only as a personal preference. I feel like using the whole foot leaves a lot of discrepancy in how high the foot goes. If I were to use the heel method, I would recommend bringing the heel up to the ankle. If you move the whole foot, it will make you bob and to me, that looks sloppy.
