I would try and find a Real Feel pad. they run around 40 to 50 bucks, 30 if you can find a good discount. they are very good and they are double sided, one soft rubber side, and one hard rubber side. just about everyone on our drumline has one, and you can get different sizes

Check out the review section also.. The Vic Firth double sided pad is good, and runs about half the price of a Reel Feel. But the best thing you could probably do is go to a local music store, and see if they have some pads you can try out, then just go with whatever you think is the best for you.

YOu could go to a plumbing supply house or a hardware store and ask for rubber gasket material. It has the same feel as the black side of a Real Feel with a little more response. YOu can get a whole roll of it for about $10 combine that with a bit of plywood and bango you got a MacGyver drum pad. Also I should mention you will obviously need rubber cement as regular glues will not work well if at all.

But could you make a practice pad out of a piece of gum, a rubberband, and a paperclip?
I think not Only MacGuyver...
