Either buy a Heavy Hitter, or you could just glue a mousepad onto a 2x4. It works well. You could just put a mousepad on a table though too.

I have both real feel and a remo pad I use the real feel but on occasions I will use the remo. The thing with the remo it is like a 6 in. so i would really start considering the real feel. there pretty cheap. I got one for $22 at interstate percussion.

Heaver Hitter Pad would be the best idea, or just vic firth pad in general,none of them cost more than $30 and they are pretty good.
If you want a traveling pad, buy the REMO PUTTY PAD.
