So ... has anyone else had to march in weird meters? This year, our show had a song with 7/8 time (counted: 1&a 2& 3&) and alternating 7/8 & 2/4 time ... that was INTERESTING. Interesting as in ... half of the band didn't understand that the first beat was a little bit longer than the other two. I'm just curious, because I know there are some other strange things out there ... I think I saw one band marching 5/4 for their Lord of the Rings show ...

my winter line had one song in 9/8. We didnt mark the qurater though, we marched the first 3 8ths then 3 quarters. It was interesting to say the least.

I don't think that this is the best way to think about it. Counting is better ! By telling people that the first 'beat' is longer it will leave room for incorrect interpretation. Count each part of the beat and subdivisions, and not call beats longer and shorter.

Anyway, yes, my band has done odd time marching. We have done 7/4 and 7/8 which are almost standard now. We have done marching on each quarter note in 7/8, catching back up on the right foot after four measures, and have tried marching 1 (+) 2 (+) 3 (+ a) 1... so it is three steps per measure. The second is harder to keep consistent throughout the band, but the first is more complicated to keep track of.

Most recently, we did parts in 3/8 and had some people do just one big step while others did three little ones for each measure. It created a nice visual effect. Good luck with your odd time adventures!

Our opener was crazy multimeter. 4/4, 2/4, 5/4, 3/4 and i think one measure of somethin else....dont remember now though. Anyway, 7/8 is something I've done before, definitely fun.

My opener last year was this random mix of 3/4, 3/8, 7/8 and 5/8. Of course the drumline mastered it way before the winds, who couldn't handle the steps. We would stall the three eighth sections and just take a longer step. Looked weird, but it was effective when people got it.

Lord of the rings in 5/4?
Would that happen to be Equus?
Our winter percussion line is doing Equus for this year's show and its in 5/4 (though our instructor made things complicated by writing the tenor part in 4/4)
5/4 isn't too hard I admit, but its the only unsual meter I have marched in/
