Zbt's are zildjian's least expensive line of cymbals. They are made differently than their top line cymbals. The Zbt's are sheet bronze cymbals. That means that when they are made they are cut out from a big sheet of bronze, and not made in a cast like the good cymbals.
The reason why the sound clangy and not crisp is because they are a lot thinner and are also made of different components than Zildjians Cast bronze cymbals. So they're not going sound as good as a pair of good cymbals. Also it's not uncommon for them to break easily or bend because of the thinness of the metal.
Your band director must have not wanted to spend the money for good cymbals. That or he doesn't know that the Zbt's and also the Zxt's lines do not sound very good and won't last as long. Let him know that the are bending and that they sound bad. He might be able to exchange them for some better ones.
Here's ziljians website if you would like to see some of their other lines of cymbals. Maybe pass it on to you director as well.
