Sticks are expensive.......especially tenor mallets........so what's with the high you get when you break a pair? I feel powerful and all, but then I get all mad because I have to buy some more......again. And what's with these Silverfox things that I've bought? One word of advice: don't get 'em. They don't break-they just bend. And i mean REALLY bend. It happened to both me and the other tenor in my line.......except his bent more because he doesn't understand the word DYNAMICS...........but that's another complaint.
------------------
I am drummer woman........hear me RRRROOOOOOLLLLL!!!

I have my tenor play with marching snare sticks through out parts of the show. Using sticks gives a more lighter tambre, and brighter short shots.

I like using sticks for that certain feel that you just don't get with mallets, but I am 100% against using sticks as an "all-the-time" thing because you don't get the scrapage and the moblility you get with mallets.
monkeyman

------------------
Rickey Alvarez
Paramount HS Tenor
AIM SN: penis
phsline@drumlines.org
phsline.drumlines.org
Judge of the Drumlines.org "SMILIE DECATHLON"

Foxes are great mallets. But I did use the wooden mallets so I cant say any thing about the shafts bending.

I BROKE MY FIRST VIC FIRTH TENOR MALLET EVER!!!
I was playing some shizznatch and my mallet felt kinda floppy so I stopped to look at it and it was cut kinda. So I went to a nearby pole to finish off my poor mallet and i broke it and it cut my hand (not bad, so it's cool) and hit my Captain right in the nuts! It was cool!
Heh, in the nuts.

------------------
Rickey Alvarez
Paramount HS Tenor
AIM SN: penis
phsline@drumlines.org
phsline.drumlines.org
Judge of the Drumlines.org "SMILIE DECATHLON"

Breaking a tenor mallet is the strangest feeling in the world.......because they dont break like a snare stick. If a tenor mallet breaks, it just pops right off. A snare stick, on the other hand, cracks and splinters without actually flying through the air like a little spinning lollipop with a tail of tape. And it just FEELS wierd when a tenor mallet breaks. The thing will be fine one minute, and totally collapse the next. the first time I broke one, I didnt look down, and I thought something was wrong with my wrist 'cause it just wouldn't play. I'll never forget that sensation!

man, i have 2 year old vic firth mt1a's and although the cookie is cracked, and occasionally moves up and down the bent metal shaft, they still work ... after those got trashed i bought some new ones and have been guarding my life with them, i aint about to spend another 35 bucks next season for a pair of mallets that can last years. (it also has to do that our practice field is an asphalt parking lot, so if they get dropped, they can crack easily...but still, ill b1tch at anyone that uses em inproperly, or on the wrong instrument, unless ok'd by me )
yep, im a b1tch when it comes to protecting my tenor mallets.
------------------
-Kevin
NHS Percussion
www.drumlines.org/nhsdrums
punk@drumlines.org
[This message has been edited by kevin_nhs (edited 10-15-2000).]

Im pretty hostile when it comes to anything and my drum. I hate when those dorky percussion-wannabes come and start tapping all over them. That makes me so mad!!! or when other players tap on the new heads and get them all "node"-al (as in marked up where they shouldn't be played) and it makes you look like you play badly. And whats with everyone wanting to use my tenor mallets in attempting to show me up? "heeheehee......let me see if i can scrape as good as drummerwoman!.... Yep! It sounds better than her! heeheehee" as they buzz the sticks over rims with no control and a bunch of clicking noises in a really fast motion to try to mimic the art of a sweep pattern............

I give a BIG LAUGH at their attempts.....

------------------
I am drummer woman........hear me RRRROOOOOOLLLLL!!!

I think it is some kind of disease of people who knew they should have learned to play drums but had some strange pull toward another instrument from the dark side... Next time someone want's to show you up, challenge them, you play first, and play sloppy and disoriented then let them play (after they are done they are usually full of themself cause they played better than you - so the next part really get's em hard) and then play after them like you invented the notion of multiple marching drums works every time (if you are better than they are ).

Rofl, where do all these people get mallets from in the first place to mark up the heads? I always keep mine in my bag (not the mallet bag strapped to drums, MY bag) since the time we were called to play at some event thing we didn't know about (director didn't either) and I had to play with old soft felt cymbal mallets - it really $ucked to say the least. Tho our director is cool about not letting anyone play someone else's drums (certain death to someone from wind, only a quick shot from a stunner to someone from the line... without permission of course).
[This message has been edited by Tenor2004 (edited 10-23-2000).]

Man, my director is the biggest b***H in the world...to me anyways. She doesn't like it when I practice by myself afterschool, and everytime I do she says, "well, thats fine but if you break a head during this your paying for the new one." Man that pisses me off, but I know that I'm not paying for a new head for PRACTICING...something the rest of my line should think about doing.
------------------
Jerek
PCN Drumline
OSU Drumline

My director loves it when I practice! He thinks I'm a tenor god. But I'm not. I'm not really all that good. I've only been playing tenors for 3 years. Everybody else at my school hatets it when I practice after school though. They say it's really annoying. Anyways, I have the same problem as you tenors2004. My drumline doesn't practice by themselves either, except for 2 people. And one of them is not my tenor buddy (the other tenors player). My instructor finally told him, "If you don't know the music and marching by next week, you don't march in the last show." We are two competitions into the season and he still doesn't know it. I'm hoping this will encourage him to practice and have it by next week. I don't think he will though.
------------------
TENORS RULE!!!

Hey, I was curious - here's a question for all of you Vic Firth MT1A mallet users: After playing the mallet for more than a month or so, do yours crack at the bottom of the handle molding, allowing the grip surface to slide up and down the mallet? If this is an intrinsic problem, why hasn't Vic Firth come out with a more durable gripping surface? Just wondering...
Hehe, the blue guy is looking at the yellow guy like he is the town drunk...
[This message has been edited by DrummerBoy2001 (edited 10-25-2000).]

yep...MT1As have had that problem for as long as I have known anything about them. As far as why they dont fix it..who knows. Of course if you ask that you can also get into question like...why do Pro-mark sticks continue to suck?...and why doesnt Premier buy back all their tenors and start a second eternal flame?
any others to add?

My MT1A's do that too. And it pisses me off. The only way i can think to fix it without buying a new pair is just to put a little piece of tape all the way around under the handle. But then there's a little lump where the tape is that really bothers me too. But I've never tried any other tenors sticks but MT1A's. So that's why I'm sticking with 'em.
------------------
TENORS RULE!!!

ok, about the practicing thing... i dont really practice, but i like to noodle around and play some things to build my chops, and even it were the show music my director would be pissed, its freakin annoying cuz hes like "this isnt the time and place to practice, rehearsal is the time" and like after a rehearsal, if he 'finishes early' and the pit wants to do a final run through to make sure we remember everything, he'll say "no, this is a rest for your brain as well as your ears" how freaking STUPID is that? grrr i get pissed off just thinking about my director. oh well, moving on...
i use mt1a's and i experience the same grip problem. but i dont see a big problem in it, sometime if they are broken in enough, hold the mallet by the head and flick the rubber part off, its fun to hit people with em, they hurt too. also, to fix it you can put tape underneath the rubber grip and the friction between the two usually keep each other in place until the grip stretches, or splits(ive played with 3 pairs of these mallets, only one of the 6 mallets actually split in the grip almost halfway up)

oh yea, add remo drums to the pile of 'suckage' along with those plastic spoon and fork things, i call em "sporks" they suck as well.
------------------
-Kevin
NHS Percussion
www.drumlines.org/nhsdrums
punk@drumlines.org
[This message has been edited by kevin_nhs (edited 10-25-2000).]

i want one of those..........thats pretty funny. drummer humor. no one else on the road would get it.
anyway, the grippy thing happens to my mallets too. you just gotta deal. maybe if they made the grippers a little more efficiently..........but whatever. like evryone has said (i just wanna say it to second their opinions) a little black tape will normally suffice. and you can always superglue the grip onto the mallet if it starts sliding up and down. Just pull it off, stick in the glue and re-insert. pull, stick, insert. haha. ill shut up now. anyway, about the glue. it works. and black electrical tape is the best fix for the torn grips.

I have a quick question for everybody, well everybody that's in high school or ever was, do you guys, or girls, ever getted messed with or picked on just because you're a drummer? There's a group of about 5 guys at my school who are best friend that just mess with me every single freakin day just because I'm a drummer. I hate it! They've been doin it ever since my freshmen year. 3 years now and I'm really gettin sick and tired of it. I would've done something a long time ago, but 2 of the guys can probably bench press me.
------------------
TENORS RULE!!!

I read this topic and it just made me think of this.
I snapped one of my tenor mallets in half last night in rehearsal. And you know what, I don't feel very macho. Cause I perform tonight and I have to go out and buy a new pair for what, tonight's performance and one more performance next weekend? This was not very good timing.
------------------
TENORS RULE!!!

Next year I think we're gonna be using a different kind of sticks though. I really hope not. I like my MT1A's.
------------------
TENORS RULE!!!
[This message has been edited by tenors_rule (edited 10-28-2000).]

The tenor line agrees on it along with the instructor. I'm gonna push hard to use the MT1A's again though.
------------------
TENORS RULE!!!

I've talked to my instructor already and he said that we're gonna have a sweep solo next year. So we probably will buy a pair of 4A's for that and some other fast stuff in the show. He is gonna make the show harder next year than this year cause next year, I'll actually have a tenor partner who knows what they're doin.
------------------
TENORS RULE!!!

What's wrong with my tenor partner or the music? Well, my tenor partner has no dedication what so ever. Absolutely none and that's all you can say about. The music, well the music was watered down cause he could'nt hack it with the music that was already written. It sucks. Bad!
------------------
TENORS RULE!!!

Hehe that does suck. I hate it when you have to water down a cool part cause "the other guy" cant hack it. So it will be funny when you get out there next year and one of you has 1As and the other 4As, hehe the crowd will be quivering in... surprise from the tonal differance.

In my case its the other girl that can't hack it. Makes me extremly angry because it was supposed to be just me in the beginning but then she got added to the tenor line for no reason!! This is no joke, she can't play open rolls, she can't hold the drums up for more than 2 min without whining, she can't march and play, she can't memorized music well, and she just straight up sucks at playing! the tenor part was really cool with all sorts of sweeps and crossovers, but then we added her, and I lost not only that, but all the rolls too! Oh well, i'm going to Oklahoma State University next year and there is where the tenors kick butt!
------------------
Jerek
PCN Drumline
OSU Drumline

Nope, I try all the time to help her, she just doesn't want to dedicate herself, She was even gone the last week of rehearsals before our biggest contest for a church field trip. She came back the same day of the contest and everyone says that its ok... It was horrible becuase it sounded <s>snugglebunny</s> [color:"red"]a lot better without her and everyone told me that. I've never said anything negative to her or about her, just that she needs to practice more. She just says that her parents don't like it that she always plays, or she says she has to practice swimming. If she put half the effort into drumline as she did swimming she could play open rolls...but she can't
------------------
Jerek
PCN Drumline
OSU Drumline

Sounds like to me that drumming isnt one of this girl's prime passions in life, so how did she get on the line in the first place? Wait. Its high school--i know where youre coming from---dont answer that. I doubt she'll ever get any better. She sounds uninterested. Shes not driven. Have you tried the "youre never gonna amount to anything!! Youll never have what it takes to hang with the big boys!" tactic? Lemme tell you, it worked like a charm for me. I laugh in their faces now............
------------------
I am drummer woman........hear me RRRROOOOOOLLLLL!!!
