If I remember correctly, I'm pretty sure it was from 1971-1988.

Yeah I think you are correct. The guy who taught me, "Benja", (not really taught but critiqued it) taught for nearly 15 years (this was last year) which would run back to about 89... this was following his years of being on the line.

And when did I say that the instructor played cymbals? Or when did I say that BD marched cymbals? Nah, I didnt think I did

Dont mean to sound so aggressive but it seems as if EVERY time I say something, someone puts words into my mouth.

I was talking about inverting cymbals from a bad hit every now and then and that lead to "horrible technique" which lead to cymbals not being on the BD... I dont think I ever mentioned any of these things... sorry

the edges.. and usually they broke when our snares would play on them in the stands..

therefore, we got a pair for marching on the feild and a different pair for the stands

Uhhh... yeahhh... READ!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I PUT "IN THE STANDS"!!!

Its easy to break pairs when you are a cymbal line marching independently. We dont hold for snares

At least get your story straight.

WE DONT HOLD ON THE FIELD. Sorry, We have stronger cymbals now for the field that are almost impossible to break. My freshman and sophomore year we didn't have "Stadium" cymbals and they had been abused in the past. Those were so easy to break on the field while playing. Sorry for the misunderstanding and kudos to you for knowing your stuff We solved our problem by buying new stadium zildjans for the field (Which also sounded so much better) and used our old cymbals in the stands...

forgive me?

- Edit for quadruple-posting. Stop this now. -

he doesnt teach now, no...

I added more to the last post
I do apologize for the mess sorry

Okay, I think we understand what's up now.

Your first post made it seem like you were breaking multiple cymbals on the field, and it seemed like you were celebrating the destruction of cymbals as a badge of honor.

I think that's what got many others riled up.

It's all good.

The only excitment in breaking a pair is getting new ones. But thats because it didnt come out of my pocket.

Ive really only "chipped" cymbals that with later use (and failed promises for holes to be drilled) would crack down and curve

As I lead the line this year, I was annoyed by the younger girls who would purpously let their cymbals continue to crack. All our cymbals are new (bought at least after the summer camp) now and hopefully wont be seeing any cracks or abuse. The cymbals before this year were just mistreated in years past (dropping, throwing down, insane visuals and playing with other players that caused cracks the most)

As far as who "Benja" is... I need to get you his full name. Hes a short guy, BRIGHT blue (sorta crossed) eyes and recently got back from japan... a cool guy actually
My instructor.. Justin Bryant, called him Benja and thats all we ever knew him as

I've broken many a cymbal. Usually on my set though. I did break 1 cymbal my freshman year helping the line carry some stuff around.

Ok, there's a little bit of misscewed information going on in here. About the gong, yes, it will crack if you do not warm it up or "prime" it. Reason being, it is a solid piece alloy-if it has not physically vibrated at least a little bit and if enough force strikes it-you bet it will crack, as you've already seen. In order to warm up a gong-you just need to get it vribrating, that can be done with circles or whatever-point is-get it moving a little.
About cymbals-they are also an alloy. You need to warm those up too. Generally you never see anyone warming them up, reasoning being-they have a much smaller surface! So, if you pick them up with enough momentum, that's usually enough to get them to begin vibrating. If you pick them up and they do not vibrate at all (you can tell by putting the edge up to your ear to hear vibrations) then just hit them gently on the side of your body or your knees and that'll be enough.
I've never cracked a pair of crash cymbals, but I have imploded a pair. NEVER hit a pair head on. Always hit at a SLIGHT ANGLE. I learned that the hard way. I used a bad pair of Sabian concert crash and as I hit, a vacuum was created-a dead was produced and one of the cymbals inverted. It took a lot of patience and some thinking to fix the problem.
Hope some of this helped.

If you guys have any questions-just ask!

Glas to hear you guys are playing and loving it-even if your goal is to crack a pair of cymbals.

Best,

Angel

At our school we have one pair of cymbals that is cracked right on the dome. So when we are playing songs and cadences alot a lot of times if they are crashed too hard the cymbal bends and the entire thing is reversed and kills the sound. We just kick the cymbal in if it does this and we don't know how to fix it. But we'll get a new pair if we try hard enough.

Generally, yes. By drilling a hole at each end of the crack, you basically stop the crack from getting any larger, but the sound of course wont be the same (as it isnt when ever the crack is made). Check out our sister site drumsets.org for some more info.
