This happen at the All Region Clinic........ We had this song called "The Ascension" it had this gong part and a girl was playing the part. On the day of our concert in the morning we were practicing a little getting ready for the concert and she broke the gong it had a big crack in the middle and it sounded like crap. so we had to use the broken gong on our concert cause they couldn't find another one. the gong sounded so bad on our concert.
Has this happened to anyone breaking cymbals?

Did she remember to warm up the gong before she played it? My BD always told us to warm up the gong, otherwise it has a chance of cracking because it's cold or something.

Broken cymbals? Yikes. They're not exactly like drum heads or sticks, dude. I've maybe chipped a little part off of the edge, but that's all.

yeah its called priming it. You have to tap it lightly in cirlces to get it vibrating before you hit it really hard.

A lot of people break gongs. Improper playing technique.
I recommend Tim Richards - CYMBAL AND GONG TECHNIQUES PAS VIDEO. It’s about $20. If you follow this you will not break a cymbal.
It’s hard to vocalize how exactly to play one you must be shown to get the full feel of it.
I've known at least 3 people that have broken gongs, and I know 4 people that have broken Set cymbals. The people that broke the set cymbals a) dropped them and they cracked, b) hit them to hard and they cracked, and c) tightened the cymbals down to much and when it vibrated the dome split. There are limits to everything. It’s a good idea before you go out and mess around with something to learn the proper technique to using it. I'd not want some random person behind the wheel of a bulldozer. Do your self a favor and read all the "how to" books you can.

*EDIT*
okay I was checking out some of my drumming sites and came across this http://www.cse.ogi.edu/Drum/FAQ/cracked_cymbal.html

I agree with what was already stated before me: do you think it is cool to break stuff that isn't yours?

I think you should change your behaviour/attitude so that you are the one known to care the most for the band's equipment.

It's things like this that give drummers bad reputations.

Moving on to the topic...
I haven't broken any cymbals. I am a little surprised some of you haven't heard of warming up the gong though. Bismark is right, read some "how to" books or something to prevent breakage.

At our HS, we have two sets of broken cymbals which were used this marching season.
One set broke while I was watching NVBassDrum3192 playing cymbals. We were playing the Hey Song, and on that song we crash high. And one time when he brought his cymbals back up to crash again. I noticed I could see light through his cymbals. I quickly dropped my cymbals and got him to stop crashing. I took his cymbal, and looked at it. And he had a crack 1/2 of the way into his cymbal. We braught it to our BD, and he just said like, "Yep, thats a crack" He said he would drill it out, so it wouldn't spread. Which consisted of just drilling a hole at the bottom of the crack. Well, he tried to do that but couldn't, so he cut the entire part where there was a crack out. And it went the rest of the season with a cut out of it.
