Ok cymbals are usually in the back, crashing away, and no one really pays very much attention to them. I was thinking, wouldn't it be cool if the snares would play some fast sixteenth note measure with many accents multiple times, then the cymbals come out in front of the line and play the exact same part, only they split the cymbals to get the 16th notes down, and they hit the exact same accents and everything. Then repeat for a while to get the crowd really excited, play the snare part, then cymbals. And even work your way up to 32nd notes.

Has anything like this split cymbal part thing I imagined ever happened?

The UK Drumline did that this year. With our 9 guys, we were able to do 16th/24th note parts with the line, as well as some cool half and halfs (outside plates to middle and back out). Cymbal waves were amplified, due to the number of players.

SPlitting cymbal parts has been getting more and more complex ever since the early 90's. And its not uncommon to hear drum corps, cloolegs/ universities...even some high school split 16th notes. alot a lothough i will say, timeing cymbal parts is more diffilut ( for me) than to split the same part on a drum or pad., maybe it has to do with all of the motion, maybe the actualy weight of the cymbal. splitting fast 32nds, individaually just doesnt sem very feasable. you may be able to do it, but you'd need some VERY expeirinced players

Hahaha!!! Good call Nye! I noticed that earlier...Doesn't it look like his right cymbal is inverted? I dunno...

Hmmm ya split 32nds would be a lil hard. And to me i dont think it would sound good. I could understand tenors or basses, but not on cymbals. Yes, split cymbal parts are pretty common. and ya Project Percussion is pretty cool.

split 32nds can work, but it has to be with a very short sound. our plates split 32nds at the end of the feature this year -- first as 2 notes per person (split "roll"), then one note per person.

EDIT -- just saw that the closer video was linked above... check it out, and at the very end, watch the two guys on the far right of the line. they're the ones splitting tap 32nds.

yeah, taps and other stroked sounds, chokes, hi-hats, slides, etc. would only sound good. All out crashes might sound like garbage.

As Project_BP said, we split 32nd's in our show this year. If you watch the end of those cymbal runs, you can watch myself and our second cymbal player first split 32nd double taps and then split singled 32nd's. It wasn't originally written as such, he and I just came up with the idea and started trying it and it wound up in the show. It sounded quite cool from within the line, as well.
