we have to. We have 25 people just in battery. Our instructor makes us. Plus earplugs lower the decibel lever making it easier to hear individual parts

My band director never put ear plugs in when he was in high school and corps and a couple of years later he found that he was 3/4 deaf in one ear and 1/2 in the other. Now, he wears ear plugs all the time when he is instructing our line and asks us to wear them also. 30 people playing in a kinda small room does alot a lot to your ear drums. I'm starting to loose my hearing also. I noticed a reduction in my hearing abilities. So, I'm wearing them now. Do yourself a favor and WEAR THEM AT ALL TIMES OF PLAYING!

I am worried I might be hurting my pets' ears. Practicing rim shots outside seems to bother them. Any comments?

i wouldnt see it as too bad if your outside, unless they sit right next to you the whole time your practicing.
if they're tied up and your playing next to them i'd start to get concerned, for one thats mean. but if they have the freedom to go else where its sorta their fault.

I have had that proplem for years not. Whenever i got too loud I had to step out of the room for a few minutes. When we pratice in the main band hall we have acoustic tuning but we all leave with our ears ringing.

2 years ago, when I started a metal band with my brother, I thought I was fine. The past year, I've added more to my set , both with cymbals and drums and I never put ear plugs in. At the start of band camp, I really didn't think about putting ear plugs in either. It was in the second week of camp when it really started to bug me, with ringing all the time. So ever since, I've used ear plugs. So I know what you're going through dude. It's not a cool thing to lose your hearing, especially if you're a musician.
