man get this. our BD pulled the percussion aside and told us all that out percussion instructor had quit and was interviewin for new jobs around the area cuz he wasnt gettin paid. by doin this, he upset a lot of people in our section. k, he has been known to be a pathelogical liar, and i've always seen through all his bull crap. but this topped it off. turns out, my instructor was goin nowhere. he just wasnt comin for the month cuz he couldnt get paid. the reason why that is, is cuz our BD bought 6 new tubas, new uniforms, and the fiesta bowl trip all in the same year and set us back like $50,000. i confronted him bout it today and he just made up some stuff to try to cover it all up. makes it worse, him and the middle school BD both got brand new 2004 trucks within a month of each other. even more screwed up.

If you're going to the Fiesta Bowl next year, when do you think would be a good time to buy the new tubas and uniforms? Not quite sure how theire getting new trucks has anything to do with the uniforms and tubas and such. They get paid a salary, what they do with it is their decision.
As a word of advice, don't confront your band director. If I were your band director and you confronted me in a less than civil way, you'd be out of the program. Does it suck that he lied to you...yes, but, he controls the budget, not you. If he's lying, take it to the head of the department. If he is the head of the department, contact administration.
Also, is it possible that maybe, just maybe the instructor did quit and started looking for other gigs, but talked to your BD and came back? I've seen that happen any times in this area.

I don't really see any problem with confronting your band director. Be civil about it...and not accusatory. Frankly, I would be offended if you went over my head without coming to me first. You may not know the whole situation, so going to the administration could cause a lot of unnecessary drama. I've seen it happen. You have the right to inquire and express concern about your band program (in a civil manner). And if someone kicked me out for something as simple as that...I would have his job. Simple as that...

You may have been out of line for calling him a liar, but this doesn't mean you need to sit back and take it. If you think something suspicious is going on with your band program, it's your responsibility to look into it. You can't really rely on someone else to do it...what if no one does? When I was in high school, all purchases whether it be equipment, or staff payments went through the boosters. Perhaps you could voice your concerns to the president of the boosters, or the treasurer? Whether your BD is your "boss" or not, he's still a civil servant and in essence is there FOR...and because of you. So speak up.
