Oh that's just Cruel Johnny! I think The entire Marching Band/ Drum Corps stuff started like in 1920's or so, maybe 1940's after the "war to end all wars" era. The two most noticed for these beginnings are The Commandants Own and I believe the first like Corps in competition today is the Cavaliers but I'm not completely sure I know The entire thing of Marching came into effect during the Early wars in Early America, like the French & Indian and Revolutionary Wars.
