Im thinking about saving up to get a set of marching toms because i really want to play in drum corps/college marching band. My problem is that i dont know what drum corps play what drums (quints, sexes) i want to go to either MSU or Uof M and MSU uses Sexes and Uof M uses Quints. im about to start lessons from Uof M's instructor so ill be playing on quints for lessons. But i still might want to go to MSU, so the question is should i think about getting Quints or Sexes?

I say its better to learn to play six than 5 because its probably easier to adapt 5 from 6 instead adapting to 6 from 5. but thats my opinion

hey man go for 6 five is good but 6 is better. you can go from 6 to 5 and 5 to 6 really easy. but for your own practice set you will find you are happier with 6 drums. Most corp music is written for 6 drums as is msu's music.

to be honest the 4 main drums are the most important, the spocks are just icing on the cake. but if i had to choose i would go with a six pack, you can always take one spock off. i would also go with the large size as well 10,12,13,14. IMOP

The University of Michigan uses sixes, not fives. I know one of the bass players, and a guy who was on the cymbol line, and they both said that they were sixes.

Unless you meant a different school, but based on your location, I don't think that you did.

I would agree with most of what multi-Thomm said, except that the brand of drums you play will determine if you can take one spock off to make fives. I know that with Dynasty you can't. I'm perfectly happy with fives - but if you want sixes, then go ahead - just remember that it will add about 100 - 120 dollars to the cost of the drums.

Pearl and yamah the spocks are removable prety easily. Yamaha uses a mounting bracket and pearls jsut screw to the back bar. need be they can come off. 120 can be snugglebunny for a 6 inch drum but if you jsut want quints and you hardly ever use the other one you could always jsut sell it. those things are like platinum becasue they are expensive to buy so im sure someone would buy it up from ya...
