JHS - yeah we do the form thing so the director knows if we have to take medicine, etc. Like for example if I ran off the field during one of those 105 degree code red air quality days, my director would figure I was going to get my inhaler and not yell at me.

Anyway we have had people have to leave the field because they were getting sick from the heat and stuff but nobody has ever had to call 911 or anything.

Our conduct code is school wide for all extracurriculars and it got a lot of heat one time a few years ago when about 50 people got busted at a party, and one of them was the principal's daughter, LOL...our director doesn't really care that much, he supports it I guess but I can't see him going out of his way to bust people.

And LOL at the crazy lady, one time these guys drove through the drill field while we were practicing and my director and capt. head took off after them screaming Since nobody got hurt it was funny as hell!

You like that one drummergrl? It's a phrase that we use down here to summarize 3-4 states: South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, and sometimes North Carolina or another state in the southeast. Lemme know if you want more catch phrases...I've got a million of em.

If we want marching band to be considered a sport, then I think we need to do a few things. First, we need to start a petition. This has already been stated and it is a good idea. Second, we need to get people to sign the petition. Everyone here would most likely sign it, but we also need to get others involved, like our schools and such. We could as our lines or bands to sign the petition, and even widen it to include proffessional marching bands, not just DCI corps. Finally, it would be a good idea to try to contact ESPN, DCI, and any other sports or percussion figures that would be interested in the idea. Though the sports networks may not be interested, if we get enough petition signatures, we may be able to persuade them.

All of this may seem a bit extreme, but it would be a small endevour if we could see DCI and marching band competitions on television!

I think band is a sport because we do a lot more work than most sports(at my school anyway). I mean we have practices from 7 in the morning to 9 but if we have "A" period we have it for 3 hours in the morning, then we have practice on the field after school for an hour or so, along with sections practicing their music. Our school also gets to school early on a saturday just before a competition. Our principal hates that the district gives us letters for it(but he hates us anyway). But hey do do as much work or more than baseball, basketball, etc. And when your in drumline you have to practice more so you can get the music to fit together so you can keep time, along with building up back muscles so you can hold the drum. Therefore, I do believe the band is a sport.

No, band is not a sport. Come on, what kind of question is that? Football, basekettball, lacrosse, rugby, swimming, gol...well, not golf. Band is music, a form of art. Contruction is physical, so is that a sport too? Just because something is physical, doesn't mean that it qualifies as a sport. Think about it, if you were talking to someone, and they asked you what sports youplay, would you say band? I think not.

That's so dumb to even consider calling band a sport.

Acually, I remember hearing about the US trying to reclaim the gold in Olympic construction working next year. <img src="/threads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif" alt="" />

did u know that some scientists did a study.. they hooked a heart monitor up to a tenor player and a marathon runner.. the tenor players heart rate was the same as the winner of the marathon .... so the tenor player got his heart rate up to the same speed in 5 mins that it took the marathon runner too.... thats some heavey workout.. i run 12 miles a day..even though it physical..drumming is still harder..b/c its alllll about always getting faster and better with no limits..its desire that makes u good... while running is just...running...

I believe that that was done in '91 or '92. They hooked up one of the tenor players from Star of Indiana to an array of medical sensor equipment while the corps did a runthrough of the show.

It was done in '93. As a side note, I believe that was the same year Bob Knight was asked by Star's staff to give an inspirational speech to the corps. After watching the rehearsal for a little while he got up and left without saying a word to the staff. About 30 minutes later he came back with his entire basketball team and told them to watch the rehearsal because he was so impressed by the work ethic and discipline of the corps. Knight then told the corps' staff that the corps didn't need an inspirational speech and that he wished his kids worked that hard.

How hard you work physically does not determine whether or not something is a sport.

But that is cool to know (about the marathon thing)...but it would have been cool to be Knight cuss out the corps.
