That's cause when our director left, we didn't have a substitute. Don't know why, but it was damn fun!

When we had a sub....we had an uno tournament(won it 5 straight times ), or play poker for gas money or something. I hate poker to this day .

You're lucky, my band class was always forced to watch the Glenn Miller Story every time the director was out from school. I think I still have every line memorized to this day. And when I hear Jimmy Stewart's voice I immediately think of Glenn Miller.

I still would take this over my last music history course in college. Instead of cancelling class, the TA would always make us watch early Italian opera whenever the professor was gone.

Hehehe...Jen, your post brings back memories...it was the same way for us in middle school....Stomp every time. And of course the periods weren't that long, so we always saw just the beginning.....

heh, in middle school our band director loved Wallace and Gromit, so when he was gone, we'd watch that....it was pretty cool. in high school, it's rare when our directors are gone....and when they are, a sub usually just lets us out to lunch early. LOL

In high school, if one of our directors is out usually the other is there and just runs rehearsal. Otherwise one of our Asst. Prinicipals who used to be a band director comes down and runs our rehearsal.

It's a lot better than in 7th grade when the one band teacher wasn't there and we had to watch Fantasia all the time...

I'm gonna jump on this and post on topic, just ebcause I haven't had a chance to talk yet. My HS drumline was 1/3 girls, and the pit was 1/2 girls. I think the fact that we had girls in our drumline came down to 2 things.

1. Our band teacher was a percussionist and female, and all of us knew that she could drum us under the table any time she wanted. I really think she provided a good role model for the girls to say with drumming.
2. The girls were really good, and earned their spots just like the guys did.

My junior year, the "official" captain was a guy, but everyone (including him) knew that he was in that position so that he could deal with the other captains as a senior on equal terms. The real captain was a girl, who was a junior. Next year, our captain was that girl, and the year after I left, Another girl was captain. So, we had a strong tradition of girls in drumline.

Also, on days when the director was gone, we would play "Lunch Money." It's a card game that uses special cards. The premise of the game is you're a bunch a Catholic schoolgirls that get into a fight on the playground. You win by beating the other people until they go unconscious, and then you steal their lunch money. If you find a deck, buy it, I guarantee you'll love it.

LOL, that's funny . Well, in HS, whenever our director is gone during Marching Season we have the Drum Major run the practice. But, during Concert Season we would either go over a peice of music again and again with a metronome (if we needed work), or we would watch our Competitions on Video. LOL, we just love our Marching Band.

OK I'm new here so I may just be rambling but oh well. I've always wondered about the whole guy/gorl ratio at my school. When my sister went to my high school the majority of the battery was girls and there were few guys...mainly on tenors (I gues because they were the only ones able to carry the premiers). Now it has switched...the majority are guys in battery, but it seems as though the girls seem to be catching up though. Last year out of the 14 people in battery only 3 were girls and the other 3 or so were in pit along with all the double reeds players who happen to eb mainly girls. This year we have 21 people in battery (including our new cymbal line) there are 5. This leaves about again 3 girl percussionists with the rest of the double reed players who are mainly girls. (I guess that's why the pits here seem to be mainly girls) The ratio is still about the same, but mainly because not many girls are even trying out for percussion anymore. We have about 32 percussionists in total this year and well only about 7 or 8 of us are girls. I find it weird at my school. Because our pit captain (who plays clarinet) could have probably been on of the better percussionists had she been one from the start. She actually was thinking of switching to percussion so she could try battery sometime in the future. I guess it just pretty much somes down to the interest of wanting to bang on a drum and actually think that it's musical isn't really offered to girls. I don't know why becasue place a marimba in front of any girl at my school and they instantly want to play percussion, but place a drum of some sort in front of them they tend to say that "banging" on a drum is too easy and a waste of time. But ya know...I kinda like the whole 4:1 ratio of guys to girls cause that gives me the power to complain about once a month to guys and thhey can't really do anything.
All in all...I think this post is pointless and i'm too lazy too proofread this.
By the way...I have also noticed the girls that are in battery tend to get into the mindset of a guy throughout the year. Th inner workings of battery...too confusing for anyone else to understand.
