I was looking into cymbal gloves for my players, but can't any type of brand to buy. Any ideas? I felt that the gloves would allow for more visual applications for my cymbal line. Thanks!!

The type I usually use are just weightlifting gloves, they work nicely. I usually put them on and some regular cotton gloves (like horn players usually wear) to keep fingerprints off and add protection to the wrists. The weightlifting gloves absorb a lot of shock and they help contruibute to a tighter fit with the straps as well. Anyhoo, they are Harbinger weightlifting gloves (the black ones last longer than the red ones, but the red ones have a wrist area thingy.)

If my line has to use gloves, I just have them use white ones. Otherwise, I don't use them at all. They just get in the way.

Thanks for the response, I ordered your tape BTW, looking forward to enhancing my cymbal line. Perhaps you can give me some insight into the proper method of the outer rotation method so the cymbal will roll around the wrist and then brought back down to the rest on the sides of the hips, simply put...the move that the cymbal lines used in DRUMLINE.

Thanks for ordering the video. I hope you get a lot out of it. As for the visual, I think you mean a flip down. Now, that depends on the grip you use. I thought in the movie that they used pistol grip, but it's been a long time since I saw it.

If you are using the "Garfield" grip (the straps wrapped around your hands), then you actually push the cymbal up and over while pulling your arm straight down. Unfortunately, it's really hard to explain in this medium. Basically let the cymbal spin while you pull your hand straight down to side rest. You are more than welcome to contact me off line and I'll try to explain it in more detail.

Baseball gloves worked when I was in high school. Cotton gloves worked well for corps- (they are super cheap to buy and get the job done). Dealing with playing and visuals- if your kids use a garfield grip the gloves won't do anything for them visually. They can do the same things with our without gloves. Gloves will, however, COMFORT their aching, sweaty, non-gloved blistering hands.

I've never held with a pistol-type grip, but could the gloves HELP by absorbing sweat so the straps don't slip out/off of their hands?

apology for pistolic ignorance!

Realize also that the DRUMLINE cymbal players were grasping the cymbals at the top of the strap with only their thumb, forefinger, and middle finger. You'll learn that this makes moves like the wad buster much easier.

When i first started playing i found a good pair of leather golf gloves, but then realized that all they did was get in the way. but with the use of the glove it did help me ease into my callouses. but now i would never use a glove, besides the strap lines are something to be proud of

screw spending 22 bucks, Walmart carries weight lifting gloves that cost about 5 bucks. they do the exact same thing. I think that the brand name is called Altus or something like that.

Snarepunk is right. Save some money. Or just forego the gloves altogether. I never have my lines use them. The kids find that the gloves minimize control of the cymbals.

we don't usually wear gloves, and if we do, it's only the cymbal line who does. they usually only use gloves for the thanksgiving parade since it's so cold, and they just use the plain white cotton gloves that the rest of the band uses.

Honestly the reason I have worn gloves is to minimize the amout of flesh touching the cymbal to keep them cleaner. Thats better than cleaning the cymbals before every show. Also gloves reduce the caulcues on the hand brought on by straps. but everyone has there own thing

I dont see the point in gloves..
People say it allows for better visuals but I think its more of a comfort issue and trying to keep from getting tough/rough hands

Well, our cymbals are old and impossibly covered in fingerprints all ready. I just don't dig the glove idea. If you were going to get them, I'd make sure they went with the uniform first and have the instructors okay it. If you were wanting them just for practice, then you shouldn't use them. They will just get you used to (possibly dependant upon) a luxury which you won't have for shows. Besides, callous is sexy.

When I was in High School our Cymbals Players never wore gloves during performances or etc. But they had the option of purchasing regular military white gloves to used during cold rehearsal and performances.

I'm with BismarkUMD. Go with the Zildjian gloves. Full-leather grip is pretty darn awesome. I have noticed a few rips at the seams, but I would still recommend them. They come in a thin orange box.

We used to use weight lifting gloves from Wal-Mart, but this year we went with batting gloves to prevent sweat and oils from building up on the cymbals, and they work pretty well

Where i go to school we use Nike KEystone gloves and they work amanzingly well we all love them. For the cymbal flip down it is sort of a flick of the wrist it is hard to tll you without showing you though and this is with the "garfeild" grip

Word. I wear my battle wounds with pride. Only at Matrix.

But at Memphis Sound we use black gloves that can be found a Wal-mart.

Keep in mind that these are two completely different techniques.. and different instructors.

Yeah our line doesn't wear gloves. Just like someone said above, we wear gloves only when its cold, but I live in Tennessee, it rarely gets cold enough to wear gloves.

In Indoor, we don't wear gloves, but at Magic, we'll be wearing gloves.

Nike Keystones . . . And yes, they do indeed rock. They're mad comfortable. Although, personally, I don't condone the use of gloves for cymbals. I think "stop being a [Cat] and just tough it out."

The cymbal players in my drumline just use Nike batting gloves that we got for like 18 bucks. They are nice tight are a lot better than just bare hands if fact in kinda feels weird playing without gloves on now. And they they never get in the way of playing

The main purpose for gloves is to keep the cymbals clean. If you are marching cymbals, you're hands are going to be sore and rough anyways. In order to protect the cymbals, you need to wear the gloves. They don't really help or hinder visuals either.

we used plain white golf gloves, but first, you have to buy the right and left hand seperatly, due to golfers using one glove when they play, and second they can cost a lot depending on what brand you get, but they are really comphey(sp?) once you break them in

Our line(lassiter) uses baseball gloves for our practices with show gloves over them for shows. Works great for preventing blisters, sores, and pain in general. But, we've found that franklin gloves tend to tear the easiest, so if other baseball gloves are available (walmart of target) stick with those. Good luck with your line!

I like using Mechanix gloves because they provide good protection from palm to fingertips.

With me the gloves are more for hand protection. This doesn't happen to everyone but I learned the hard way that it is very possible to inflict nerve damage playing unprotected. It can still happen either way, it just cuts down your risk.

For cymballers with itty bitty tiny little girl hands the extra thickness of weightlifting or Mechanix gloves helps keep your lines from wanting to lengthen the slit in the straps to go tighter when the straps get older and more stretched out. But if your lines are like mine then they aren't really in a rush to have their straps tight enough :P
