I have seen some with seven but the difference between the smallest heads are very little.. but at my school we have 5, but with professionals, sometimes they have 6.

We have 5. Our tenor players want 6 but...too bad for them. Never seen 7 before, but that'd would make for some really sweet parts.

we use 6. i wanna use 5 because the sound difference isnt really crucial. i've never seen seven before, but i would like to know what the purpose would be behind one more drum.

i have never seen seven, heard of seven, or can even figure out how they stick seven in there, and finally what the purpose is?

most DCI lines use 6...some still use 5....no one in DCI uses 4 anymore.

Our school has 5, and I really don't see a need for six, unless its like BDs rig this year, 6,8,10,11,12,13,14 (if thats wrong correct me). Different size shots make sense, same don't.

Our school uses 5, i tried to get the sixth one on, but i waasn't very successful, so i guess i will be carrying quints once again. I haven't seen 7 yet, but i think it's stupid unless you can have 7 with a bd setup!

we use 6 drum set up, with a double 6", i wasn't really impressed with BD rig this year. i thought i would like a 6" and 8" spocks, but when they played anything with both spocks involved it sounded like a poorly tuned bongo and a spock....maybe the sound will grow on me..look heavy as hell...imagine if they were Pearl deep shells....holy_____

7 drums? Me want... We use 5, but when we get our new drums I'm hoping to get 6. I thought that the BD setup this year was pretty cool, and I would love to try it out.

Boston only had 5 but they used a 8" shot drum...the sound really cut through...alot a lot more than BD's...probably because of the tuning.

oh, and Big John...you gave BD a 7 drum setup...I have never seen an 11" tenor drum. BD's setup was :

12 10
14 8 6 13

most setups just replace the 8" with another 6" with a different head.

My school USED to have Quads. Yamaha Powerlites. They were total S*** though... Drums three and four were never really on all that tight, so they kept on falling off... lmao. We bought two sets of Pearl Quints. Very nice. So much better sounding too...

Lol this is kind of OT,but we bought one set before last year's season, and another just before school got out in July. our booster's buy all our equipment for us, and our band director told them to measure the drums on the quints and buy another. Well, you know what they did? The measured the quads. So now, we have Large quints and a small quints. *shakes head*

I know that Barry corrected you on it, but for the record, there is no such thing as an 11" head (unless you play congas).

We have four too... which really sucks because most of the stuff I write is for quints or squints. If I played them, I'd make a PVC spock or two to use; after all, we only have one set of tenors.

If you think 4 is fun then you'll think 6 is the shizzz... I thought jsut ahving 4 was awesome then i added a 5th and i was quite happy then i added a 6th and now it just reeks of awesomenessticity.. Having 5 gives you more of a drumset kind of feel becasue you have your drum 4 is low like a bass then your shot drum is like your snare being right infront of you and being high and difrent then you have your 3 toms.

A bit of history..

In the year 1977, from Atlanta,GA. there came a Spirit and
this Spirit was blessed with a tenor line. In the age of the triple tom, this line had not 3 or even a scant 5. On
their carrier lived a creature called the septom. It spoke
with 9 voices and it was good...the moral of the story is?

Never forget. Drums are instruments, the more toms you've got, the more music you get.

very carefully, but that would be way too heavy for anyone, I mean dang 9 drums? you'd have 6 toms in the outside area and have 3 6 inch toms for spocks. OUCH! talk about killing dogs, you'd have 6,6,6,6,8,10,12,13,14 for the whole setup, now that's crazy and no current Harness can hold that. Now having put my opinion on a 9 set, FHS has Premier Quints, BHS has Quads because we are a little poor. Oh well what can we do?

i've heard about them even saw a picture of that spirit line but from far, you also have to remember back then carriers weren't like they are today they just bolted drums onto metal, didn't worry so much about weight, hell the drums didn't even flip up, i would love to see a picture or a diagram of that set up,

i know a couple of years ago another site a an article from jon baily about the history of tenors, and the different set ups they tried one i thought was the most interesting was a slingerland quint i think but it had a 8 instead of a 6 but the set up went like this
..12...10...
14...8...13.

i'm not sure but i know there was a large gap between drums 1 and 2

actually i found a pic not very good but hey.

with the september thing, sepetember was originally the seventh month, they added July and August after Julis and Augustus Caesar. So septom still doesn't make sense.

It seems to me that if there were 7 drums then you'd have to reach quite a ways to get to the 4 that aren't spocks.

Lol. To my knowledge, there has never been a set of 'decatoms.' As far as the others, you could have just asked someone here about those - its common knowledge for anyone whos been here any length of time

Hahaha, our quint players complain about carrying five drums, I would hate to see them have to carry ten!

You say your drums were wobbly? We replaced our cause the harness snapped during a visual in a competion.
And why does it seem like every high school is getting quints. We just replaced our quads with quints last year. And why does it seem like every high school is getting quints. Every high school around me has quints or sexes.
For all I know we'll prolly get sexes in 5 years to replace our quints. Hmm Decatoms I would love to see some of those.
