I would make sure then understand what they are playing. Sometimes bass players like to think as triplet runs as really fast. they will have the tendency to play their 3's crushed and not open. I like to count threes as " 1 &" where the first 3 grouping is played on count 1 and the second 3 grouping is played on the "and"
It should help if they understand this method, it helped me.
and for the 4's ,I'm guessing your talking about 32nd note 4's. for this its pretty much the same. make sure they both understand that they play either on "1" or "&"
players also have the tendency to crush there 4's because they think its really really fast, basically its just like playing two 16th notes on one hand but adding in the left hand.
But yea it just takes time and patience. they will get it better with a better understanding of whats going on.
