Depends on the corps I suppose. My transition from a decent college drumline to the Scouts was almost overwhelming. From a playing standpoint, I'm sure going to any corps will be rather difficult because the standards have just been raised to heights you couldn't have imagined. Physically, it depends on where you march. From a mental standpoint, it's going to be difficult, but if you are strong-willed and not easily flustered, you will be fine.

That pretty much sums it up. Things move a lot faster. You're expected to learn things much quicker, fix problems immediately, and give 100% all the time. I was fortunate because I was in a college line with a number of guys who were marching corps so I was able to gauge my abilities with theirs. Plus, they helped me understand what was expected at an audition.

Like Jofus said, the bar is raised immensely. The first time you walk into a corps audition you'll be surprised at the number of great players there. Much different than high school where you've always got the player or two who are only there because their parents make them.

what surprised me the most not so much the playing, but more so the physical/lifestyle shock you go through. it's a really intense way to live.

I'm going to try out for a DCA line for next season. I don't expect to make it, but I just want to go and see what it's like so that I can be prepared for the following season, when I'd hopefully be good enough. The problem here is that at school we march small block tenors, and when I go to the tryouts that will be my first time ever playing on large block. I hope I can make the transition on-the-spot :\.

You might want to look into the big block tenor pad. I'm in that same boat as you, I'm scared that I won't be able to play the large blocks with spocks, we use small blocks with no spocks. Look into the quadropad, I hear its pretty decent, but I also hear that trying to play the small blocks again is going to drive you crazy.

Aim for a spot, whats the point in going if your not trying to make it, try your best and you might be suprised at how good you really are.

just to let you guys know, being a drummer, he meant to hit the rims, it's part of the effect. It changes it up a bit.

Yeah, at least our drums at school have 1 spock. I'm definitely aiming for the spot, but realistically I don't think I'm good enough yet. But whatever, all the better if I do end up making it, right?

But I think I'm going to die the following fall season having to play the little tenors after spending all summer on big blocks.

I'm not sure on how much experience you have exactly, but I can tell you this. Most people who get interested in these activities try to jump in too fast. Take your time and get better. Save some money and buy your own tenors. Or better yet, practice on a single surface for a while until everything is top notch. If you can play it on one surface, you can play it on 4, 5 or 6. But if you really want to try out this year, I would suggest the Hurricanes. They are close to home for you. Hope this helps. Have a nice day.

DCA isnt as hard to get into as you expect so have faith and im sure youll do fine (then again im from the east coast thats just what i see)
My recomendation tho is to find an open class DCI first...dca you can march forever (respectively) DCI has an age limit

The trasition is as hard as you make it imo i mean you gotta prepare and practice hard, be ready physically and mentally its gonna be the hardest thing you will ever do. but will be the best thing you have ever done in my life who knows maybe we will see eachother on tour next year good luck.
