can anyone here help me with cheeses? I seem to be having troubles with getting the diddle in actually using the rebound.

I am no expert on hybrids but what has helped me is to start out with a simple flam accent for a measure then simply add the double strokes on the next measure to make a cheese-let. A cheese is really a double stroke with a grace note. The key is going slow enough to produce muscle memory.good luck to ya..

Extendo Triplet Diddle.

Cheese Accent Breakdown.

Flam Five Breakdown.

Mini Three.

The first exercise is the all important triple diddle exercise. Without strong hand to hand diddles, cheese and flam five patterns will not be accomplished effectively. The triplet diddle exercise strengthens the double stroke as well as creates comfort with the hand to hand motion.

The second two exercises work hand independence, so that each hand can develop the motion and consistency needed for cheese and flam five construction.

The third exercise is a triplet diddle style exercise that meshes diddles and flam accents together incrementally to develop cheeses, flam drags, and flam fives.

All exercises are courtesy of www.snarescience.com, a fantastic website with a large library of both standard and unorthodox exercises to work your chops, as well as a load of transcribed snare music from various shows (it's not my site, so this isn't just a shameless plug).

The exercises posted above are a means of streamlining the overall end result. Playing those exercises is probably your best bet in developing as quickly as such development should occur, sans bad habits and poor stick control.

There's not really a faster way, nor a better way.

If, by "straight rudiments," you're referring to what rudiments go into cheeses, the recipe is flam accents and diddled triplets. Those exercises break down both and put them together.

Check out Jeff Queens video "Playing with Sticks". It has really helped me. Also, I recommend the Rudimental Cookbook by Edward Freytag. The biggest help I can give & that is not much is that make sure you have a very strong handle on the PASIC 40 rudiments before attempting hybrids. You might also find a DCI veteran in your area that can help you with those diddle hybrids.

alright. I can get 16th note cheeses at about 100 bpm.

I don't know what the problem is, though, because I can play other similar rudiments like flam paradiddles, flam taps, swiss triplets, etc. no problem.
