To add a different texture to what's going on. Go listen to some old school Bridgemen stuff (or some new school stuff too). Delucia is a big user of Drumset and does it in a way that adds to the textures, not simply doubling the battery.

Think of it this way, having a drum set allows the battery to play their parts, and yet gives even more feeling of groove. Many corps have done very well at this. Also, who is to say the battery can play with more precision. I know some drumset players that have a sense of time that is sickening. Its all about progression. Music is always adapting so why not go with it.

I think its alright to have a drum set player because hes not necessarily always playing the same part as the drum line and adds a different type of sound for the pit. It also helps in groove parts for certain shows and has been pulled of many times by DCI bands

...It also helps in groove parts for certain shows and has been pulled of many times by DCI bands... I wasn't aware that DRUM CORPS International had bands.

Another plus is that it can help your pit during their breaks. Having a high-hat that isn't overpowering, yet still helping the pit keep time is always good.

Lakewood Ranch is doing a rock show this year, and we have three really tight drum sets for the upcoming season, is last I heard, as long as they're tight, I like it.

The school I'm primarily working with this year has no drumline, but 2 Drumset players, both mic'd and 2 synths. The two drumset parts are totally different- tailored to the ability of the players with some unison areas and fills. They will be competing at BOA this year, and they have one several times with this method.
