Hey guys, it's me asking for help with auditions again... >_<
As you may notice in my signature, IU's music school is where I want to spend the next 4 years of my life. I'm A junior right now so my auditions will be in spring 2009. I'm confident that I'll get into the university itself, but getting into the music school is another story. 1/4 of the applicants get in (for all instruments, not percussion specifically). I need to do everything in my power to prepare for that audition, so I would like to know every bit of information DLO has to offer about IU's music school. No bit of detail is too obscure for me. Particularly the people who auditioned there, I want to know everything about your audition experience start to finish


Also, I'm going up there this summer for 2 weeks, 1 week studying percussion and the 2nd is an audition preparation course for college auditions... Hopefully that will give me an edge on the competition.

My wife's uncle did his undergraduate and graduate work there and loved it. He's not a percussionist but is teaching in the jazz studies department at Juilliard. It's a great school academically and musically. Just getting into the school is tricky enough but getting in the school of music is flat out difficult.

Know your stuff when you audition. IU is one of those weird music schools. By that I mean this, they're not a conservatory but they expect their players to be of that caliber. It's kinda reminiscent of Northwestern.

If you're going there this summer then I think you'll have a leg up. Hopefully you'll learn what they're expecting in an audition and you'll have plenty of time to prepare for it. Over the years, the percussionsists that I've met from IU were orchestral players. Not to say they weren't all-around great players but they wanted those coveted symphony gigs.

Now that Kevin Bobo is there, you better have a good foundation on marimba. He came to Vanderbilt and did a clinic. He floored me with his talent. I did the College Audition Preparation program there 2 summers ago after my junior year of high school when Tony Cirone was still teaching there. The program's a good idea of what you're going to need to do and know to get in. Also, take a summer theory course. Part of your audition will be a "musicianship" test that will have you reading and also sight singing.
