The Royalaires did a few years back and Cavaliers Anniversary Corps has a guy using a single tenor. I haven't seen a junior corps use one since the 60's.

They haven't been popular in corps-style lines for a few decades, but single tenors are used by Scottish pipe bands and southern show-style bands.

I've only seen a few schools with them, most of the show style bands I saw last season didn't have tenor drum, though 2-3 had quads.

But on have 7 snare 2 bass.... they were bad for show style.

oh, and our bands almost ran into each other marching out of the stadium

My high is a southern show style band and we are using them for the first time in 3 years. I was curious if the single tenor was still being played in modern drumlines.

Our High school band tries so hard to achieve the BD style, so naturally we are a band driven like a drum corps. which means we are using marching quads.

Have you noticed that they only use single tenors in the movie, but most of the cadences have quads in them?

Also, when he prints out the cadence, it's actually the sheet music for a cadence played earlier in the movie. Oversight?

amen i agree w/ my instructor from last year's band camp. they need to get every copy of that movie put them all in one big pile and have a giant bon fire. of course u'd have to have wood and crap in there so it'd last but u get the point.

and as far as the single tenor thing goes ive never seen a HS w/ them but i do know Alabama A&M uses them.

Yea, I've never really gotten the point of the show bands marching quads and single tenors. Then they mount the tenor drums sideways and play them like bass drums... I dont get it.

I have no experience with it, but center snare at my corps marched in a show band his freshman year of college and said it was actually a lot of fun. Everyone has there own opinion though I guess.

And the show bands are sitting there complaining about corps because it's too square. To each his own I guess.

Back on topic: We don't use single tenors anymore, but we do have about 4-5 still in storage along with some tri-toms.

Oh man, This is becoming a throw-back thread faster and faster, single tenors AND trio's, Good things you can find in the old percussion storage. Of course, at my school at least, they might break if you move them, but still fun none the less.

If you thought that was a throw back I found some old snare drums (one would call it a parade drum nowadays)with the slings in a box nearby that you could trace to recordings made in the 50s-60s (or maybe earlier, but I don't have the piece of hardware required to play the stuff older than that)

We use multi-tenors at my high school, and to my knowledge we never used single toms. I have nothing against them, and if it was proper to use in a show, then I wouldn't complain. Show bands use them, sure. It's their thing. That's ok, to each his own. I feel that, while we don't necessarily need them (due to the bass drums being able to provide a similar impact that toms do), they serve a purpose with show bands.

Thats because in a scotch band, thats what the tenor drums job is to do. It has a specific name, Though I can't remember now, but thats the job of the tenors. They tie the sticks to their fingers and flip them as a visual, it's not her showing off, it's what the scotch bands do.

Exactly. The Fife and Drum Corps in Scotland do those visuals with their single toms. It has always been done like that there I can imagine.

FLOURISH! thats the name for it! But yea, thats what their job is in a pipe band, play quarter notes but make it flashy. The biggest one I can think of now, they take both hands in the air and hold them together, and spin the sticks, so it looks like their holding a wheel by the axel, and letting it spin, while playing usually quarter notes with alternate hands.

If that makes sense...
