I would be a bit more excited...but this year we arn't going to have a drumline advisor...instead our band director (who thinks he knows drumline...but doesn't :| ) is going to hold try outs...hopefully after that we will get contol over the line. :P anyways...I'm going to try out for tenors and snare... (i want to do tenors so that i can have played in all 4 sections (minus cymbols)) if the kid thats going to be captain next year makes tenors then i will do snare and be snare section leader...if we both make snare then i would be co-section leader...or possiblly co-captain... Oh and our show will be either...danny elfman music...moulon rough...or jekyle and hyde... :P So when are your try out? what is your show? and what section do you want?

Before we got an instructor, spots were decided by experience and seniority, so atleast you have a director that can somewhat make a better decision than letting upperclassmen take spots, even if they do or do not deserve them. We pretty much are close to done with spots (its more like an informal audition based upon several weeks of practice/dedication/etc) and I have made Quints as a 2nd year.
I wish you the best of luck with your auditions, and if you want some advice from a Quint player, be more focused on your Y axis (Dynamics, Heights, etc) even though that is the most important axis, its definately something that directors/instructors/random percussionists can easily spot.

Sounds a lot like us. Our bd's running try-outs, and it's gonna really suck. He knows absolutely nothing about drumming, but at least our instructor might be back for band camp. I'm trying out for snare again, and if I make it I'll be snare section leader. Our show's gonna be Danny Elfman music with songs from Spiderman, Nightmare Before Christmas, and Edward Scissorhands I think. lol...is the show called like... "music for a darkened theater"? beacuse thats what we might do (music from spiderman, nightmare before christmas, and beetlejuice... )

We pretty much are close to done with spots (its more like an informal audition based upon several weeks of practice/dedication/etc) . this is like us our tryouts ended last week and were done from weeks of practice dedication etc. i don't officially know what i've made but after talkin to my instructor i have mostly likely made quints. he said he still had to talk it over with my director about everyone's positions and such. but i believe i'll be added as a second quint because before this past season my director himself said "we can't survive another year without a second tenor" and we were supposed to add a second tenor and a 3'rd snare but some people quit and we had to adjust accordingly..anyways the line up my instructor is talkin about is the same as we were supposed to do this past season.. so yea i wish you luck on your tryouts as far as our half time theme i believe its pirates of the caribbean

Have good technique. Your instructor will not be impressed if you can play something like Ditty, but your technique is complete crap. As for my line, we don't really have tryouts. We set who we can around the end of the year before summer, then come band camp, we figure out what to do with the freshmen. I'll be the lone tenor again, though, no doubt. Our show still hasn't been announced, but everyone's leaning towards a Latin show. I personally don't care what it is as long as 1) we have an actual percussion feature for once, 2) it doesn't consist of crappy pop songs that call for drum set imitation, and 3) it just doesn't suck. But yeah, our director puts together the crappiest shows. They're all just a mix of songs that fit under a broad category, like broadway, or super heroes, to name a couple. There's no story, no one theme, no imagination. The worst part is, he calls it "thinking outside the box." =/

thanks, last year our show wasnt anounced until the end of band camp right before school staretd. it sucked, 5 hrs a day after school for a month and why, because we didnt have the freking money for a show. that really ticked me off. i am really looking forward to our line next year. its probobly gona suck but in a few years with all the new people and their experience in a few years we will be great.)hopefully)

Our tryouts are this week, Monday through Friday.
It's kind of the opposite of you TS, last year or BD did it, now we have an instructor =]
It's going good so far though, the basses are getting there, even though the majority can't read music at all =[ eeek. tenors are sounding good, especially since there's only one freshman on them (well, we don't know our final spots yet, but during tryouts), and snares (what i'm doing), well, is kinda dissapointing.
Most of the people from last year quit, which is good, because they were a**holes to everyone, and i thought it was just gonna be me and one other guy from last year on snare, but he went to tenors, after i left them =/. So there's me, one guy from last year, and two complete new people.
