So i got the timpani part this year for marching season. I need to buy mallets. Because of a sponsorship from vicfirth i need to use those mallets. I need mallets that can take a beating. The old timpani player told me that the Tim Genis series doesnt take the beating well. What firth mallet can take the beating of marching season but still get a good enough sound out?

I guess you could try the American Custom Series for timpani use. Though I don't know if any of them can take a beating through marching season. Personally, I use the cartwheels for my timpani playing in concert band. They have a soft, and legato passage when being played. But, I also don't know what kind of sound you are looking for.

1) All around style of playing - T1 General
2) Legato and soft - T2 Cartwheels
3) Medium hard articulation - T3 Staccato
4) Really hard - T4 Ultra Staccato

Again I don't know which of these can take a beating, but they are good considerations playing wise from Vic Firth.

Well, a good idea would be the Corpsmaster Timp mallets by Firth. They have the same graduated series as far as mallet heads, but have a more durable shaft, making them ideal for marching band.

its not so much the shafts thats an issue. its the felt and fuzz on the head that gets ruined. I'm ordering the T1 T2 T3 + T6 and also repair kits. That will hopefully make me through the season ok. If those arent working then im gonna get the corpmaster. Are any little things i can do to the heads to make them last longer. i noticed the old timpani player put stocking on the heads

The corps master timpani mallets have synthetic felt heads more for durability and weather resistance.

Like stated above, the Corpsmaster series have synthetic heads, but you can wrap the heads in pantyhose and tie em off with a rubber band. This keeps the natural tone of the mallet, but prevents fraying and felt-pull.

If you don't want to play with the pantyhose (I've had some trouble with tone production with those in the past), just put some sandwich bags over the heads and twist them to protect the felt when you're not playing. You shouldn't get any more wear on a timpani mallet during marching season than you would during concert season. I might be wrong but I didn't think technique should change. Just my 2 cents.

not true. there's a reason why corpsmasters are more durable. weather affects the sound quality as well as the mallet breakdown immensely

the corpsmaster timp mallets are my all time favorite....best thing they've ever done...I just like the longer shaft...it makes technique better and more efficient in younger players. You can get a strong attack velocity by using minimal wrist and finger movement...I just love 'em!

To be honest, as much as one is going to practice in a given marching season, even with synthetic felts you're probably not going to have the felt last the entire season.

My advice is to learn how to rewrap timpani mallets. It's not overly difficult (it's easier than marimba mallets, I think), and it can allow you to modify aspects of the mallets that you may think could be improved.
