if ur in high school i would recommend neither seeing as you probably won't be playing bass drum for four years in a row. If you are in a drumcorps (which i kind of doubt, having knowledge of your previous posts) and you play bass drum and you plan on continuing i would get the pad, because its smaller, easier to transport, makes less sound, and you will probably get more use from it. if it were me, I would get neither, and i would get a good vf snare pad.

Get the pad.. The bass drum won't really serve you much purpose. You probably won't use it except to practice on. And you can practice more on the pad without having people getting agrivated from hearing you hit the bass drum over and over again. If its just for practicing purposes, get the pad.

I'm sorry but I have been playing bass my entire high school career and plan on doing it next year as well as a senior. That's 4 years.

I would go with the practice pad as you can always just stay after school to practice on the real drum.

I didn't mean to offend anyone, its just that in our high school bass drum isn't terribly difficult and pretty much everyone just wants to play snare, so anyone on bass drum doesn't really want to stay there, and as such they end up moving on to snare. That's all i was trying to say. Back on topic...get the pad...it's probably cheaper anyways.

Yea, If your just going to practice, get the pad, especailly since if you do plan on going to a drumcorp, their basses are going to feel diffrent then the bass your used to practicing on anyway, With the pad, youve got a good chop builder, and something thatll feel closer to other bass's, then well, another bass, if that makes sense

So, if you buy strait pads, thats only 150 dollars in pads, (100 for the quadropad, 50 for the bass) instead of 300 for a bass, that your just going to stop using if you do move over to multi's

Get a pad man for sure. You can take them anywhere, & your family & friends will appreciate it more than a boomy bass drum. Drums are quite annoying to folks that are not into them.

Yep.
Pad is the way to go.
I took my bass home last year to practice, let's just say the neighbors didn't really appreciate me practicing at 8 am on a Saturday morning. oops.

You can get any kind of pad at steveweiss. Sam Ash might have it.. Go to the brand or pad's site and find online dealers.

I saw it for cheap on samash or steveweiss, one of those two, Its Not cheap, in the term, but its a lot better than shipping out 500 bucks for a set of multis when you can just get a pad for 100-120

Shooottt, I have no clue how mallets would work on a quadropad, Ive only seen people really use sticks on them

But If your going to march, Suggesting some hard plastic mallets? Those are all you really need, Felt, cotton, other effects mallets arnt really needed, get your metal shaft, hard plastic mallets first

Mt1a or mt1a-s would do the trick, if not, practice with sticks, and try and convert it to mallets

Tenor mallets and pads don't go together. It's a very dead feel, with virtually no useful rebound. You pretty much have to use sticks on a pad.

How can that be the end of the story when that page doesn't list the best model in the lineup (IMO)? They don't show the MT1A-S.

...but they still don't work on a pad.

I completely agree with SkyDog, (sorry Aaronicus) but those mallets don't give you any real feel at all. I've used those exact mallets (MT1A) on the heavy hitter quadropad I have. It's just no fun. Sticks work the best, I just kinda used whatever sticks were next to it, haha, but I'm sure vegas would even work on them, although I haven't tried it (don't quote me on it) but yeah, sticks. Use those.
Peace.

I disagree. Vegas do "work" on a pad, but I think they feel almost as bad as mallets. Better to get some snare sticks, or possibly some hardimon tenor sticks for pad use, IMO.

Agreed.

Vegas, IMO, feel terrible on a pad.

They're also seeing a lot less time on the field with my team- we're just getting better performance out of other models.

i wouldnt go for either
dont buy a drum if youre not gonna play it for more that a couple years
the pad is really only good to fix technique and to see your hands...it is not good for chop building or to get used to the rebound
you can get tenor pads at steveweissmusic.com samash.com or columbuspercussion.com if you want the vic firth one

i recomend the xymox murray gusseck signature pad its snugglebunny like the Yamaha or promark pads with the feel of it but it has raised areas between the drums to act as "rims" to practice your sweeps

I wouldn't. They have assorted problems( laminates breaking without replacements) and just don't have the versatility of a heavy hitter quadropad (with laminates, i HIGHLY recommend those).
