I've seen videos of pat fitzgibbons or some other hotshot IE solo player and it looks like they're playing a straight clean singles/ double stroke roll, but are switching their sticks during the strokes...
Does anybody understand how this works at all? An explanation would be nice, thanks.

Taternuts, what do you have against Fitzgibbon? I don't see anything wrong with him or his playing.
Even though my chops aren't nearly as good as anyone at I&E, I tried an ultra-slow-motion version of what Kevin suggested. I think it might be a double stroke roll but you toss the stick after the second stroke, but there's probably something else behind it. Even at 60 bpm I was dropping sticks.
