Steve Weiss now has MX Black tenor heads and black MX1 and MX2 bass heads!

The black heads are apparently the same as the white, just a different color.

I assume (well, I hope) that MX Black snare heads are soon to follow.

We just got all new marching drums and they are black. We used to have white drums and white heads but I think now we will have to switch to black heads. I have never even seen black tenor heads before!

I wouldn't count on Evans' black heads to be "the same" as their other heads. The different dyes and plastics used for colored heads can have a big effect on how a head sounds. Just listen to Remo's various black heads for an example: Black Max, Ebony Suede, Ebony Pinstripe, Ebony bass, etc.

Whether or not they're the same as Evans' other heads, they can still be good heads. I'm looking forward to hearing 'em.

The MX Black tenor heads are 0.5 mil. thinner than the MX White.

black tenor and bass head... just don't look right to me, but on a snare it could be white or black. I'm used to clear or white on tenors

If you look at Evans' web site, they have a chart that's supposed to tell you roughly what each head sounds like. According to the chart, the MX Black tenor head is a very bright (high-pitched) head with a moderately defined attack. The MX Black bass heads are also listed as brighter than their white counterparts.

I think I'll be avoiding the MX Black tenor heads since I'm stuck with small block tenors at the school I instruct. I want something with a dark sound to help offset the small shell size.

It's kinda interesting that Evans' black heads are brighter in tone than their other Mylar heads while Remo's black heads are darker than their non-black counterparts.

We're using the MX Black tenor heads at Music City Legend and they sound great on the large size tenors! As advertised they are brighter than the white heads. Good call on sticking with a darker sound, SkyDog, for the small tenors sets.

I bought some black MX1's for the basses but I've not yet put them on so I can't speak on those, however, Spirit is using them and they sound great.

Hey Hulka, any update on the black MX1's?

I just ordered a set for one of my groups (w/ a MX2 on 28" bottom) and I can't wait to get them in.

Thanks!
