Aside from the Garfield Grip, what are the other kinds of grips? Especially the ones that allow spinning yet still have enough control to crash. Like uptwirls, number one etc.

The hold you're thinking of is a hold made for spinning. I'll try to explain the best I can without visuals. You put your fingers, minus the thumb, through the strap, and then spin it around so that the strap is held mainly through your index and middle finger.
We do that hold sometimes for visuals, but IMO, doesn't allow for crashes with good sound quality. It's possible, but I think it sounds like poo. I'd only use it for visuals, and even then, you don't need that hold for those visuals.
If you can find our Vic Firth video somewhere around the internet, you can see Southern Miss's cymbal line doing those kind of flips and visuals with the hold that I tried to explain earlier.

So during a piece you switch into the other grip? I still don't quite understand it. Is this the one Tennessee state uses; or I guess a clearer example, Drumline the movie? Can you post the url of the video by th way?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rOB10-MKB-YHere's the video I was talking about. We're holding in the pistol grip for a good part, and I switch during the middle for more control on the taps, and switch back to pistol when I need it for the visuals. Again, you can do pretty much everything you need with Garfield. I wouldn't recommend pistol grip.
