First just because you can't hear it on youtube doesn't mean its bull. They do have snares. just so i am clear I have seen them with my own eyes they do exsists.

Second, they didnt use them the whole show. it was an "effect". it is possible you didn't see that part on the lot video.

Third, its a frickin video. nothing sounds the same as it does in person. it is possible the mic on the video did not pic up on the snare sound.

oh ya btw take the advice. because you are on you way to ban town, friend. you don't want a mod dogging you.

Now back to your regularly scheduled programming...

So, we have derived that Cavies had some snares attachments on the basses in '92 and on the tenors somewhere around '02-'03. I think I recall Star having some snares rigged onto their tenors around '91. Any of you old guys remember that or did I just dream that up?

Nope, you're right. Star used a 10" "scottie" snare, but I think it was in the '88/'89 shows. It was used instead of a spock. I'm pretty sure that there's a picture on one of the other threads about this topic.

Also, in the late 90's/early 00's Southwind's quadline had MTS units in either drum 3 or 4...can't remember which. I'm guessing that's what Cavaliers did in '02/03? A little different than the ghetto-rigged version they used in '93 with the snare feet!

Poly you are very right. I looked through all of the pages of the other topics and saw that pic. I also came across a pic of what I think was in a wgi show where they had a snare in the middle surrounded by 2 toms, I didn't see what size they were. could anybody tell me who these people are?

my high school is doing the snare attached to tenor thing this year. We have them set up so that the snare is where the spock should be. We have 6 snenor players and 5 basses. 3 of the snares are 10" Yamaha stage customs and three of them are Pearl firecrackers. We would have used all Yamaha stage customs but apparently they were discontinued. We had to modify the brace part of the tenor that connects to the carrier so that we could get the drums to fit. We are having troubles getting a clean snare sound on the snares but i think it is something we can fix if we mess around with the tuning. The only down side is that the drums dont fold up so after a long time, they really start to kill you shoulders. The reason we chose to go with the snenors is because we dont really have enough solid players to complete a 5 person snare line and 3 person tenor line since we lost a lot of people last year and we thought it would be a different to have a 6 person snenor line in which we can have snare and tenor parts. At least thats why i think we chose to go in that direction.

A couple things to consider with your snare sound, You wont get that articulate snare sound like a marching snare, due to different heads, snare strands, depth of the shell.

Tunning will definitely will help, but i would also put a patch on the bottom head, i would even go so far as to add a top snares to the drum. its not all that hard to do.

I know BD did that one year in the 90's. I don't remember the show, though.

They didn't exactly have a snare attached persay- basically what they did is they attached the snares and a switch to the 14" drum head- allowing them to turn the snares on when needed yet still have a drum 4 when the snares were off- and it was in 1996 that BD did that

Ok, thanks for clearing that up. Also, I think they had a custom swizzle tenor stick that year too. I think one side was (and I'm sorry if I butcher this) a Omar Hakim bead, while the other side was the usual vega bead. they would use the O.H. bead when playing the Snare thing, and use the vega for normal playing.
