The day before our talent show last year (we play in it ever year), we were practicing with the bases on the ground. I had some form of metal-shaft sticks with heads that were seriously 4 inches in diameter. After an accent part in one of our cadences, I noticed one of my mallets now longer had a head. I turned around and out band director was stariung angrily through the pane of broken glass on his office door. Oops. I had to play with african mallets that night, actually, and they worked wonders.

One time at a home football game, one of the bass drummers hit the drum hard enough that the head of the mallet flew off. It ended up way up in the stands (we were sitting in the stands playing) in the clairinet section. It was pretty funny.

I have to admit its some what a tradition in are drumline to break a stick or a malet before you graduate, i know its kinda of stupied but its true. also supposely its good luck to break one the day before a competition.... dont ask why, i have no idea!!! I've only broken one malet the two years I've been playing, and it was an pratice stick!! what happend was during the pratice before the competition we were doing our big solo part in the show up fron, and i started the 4 measures of rim clicks, i noticed that I broke my right stick in half, not thinking I threw it and our director caught it and threw it back at me while i was crab steping to back feild and told me to use the other end...it worked!! I was more supprised that I actually caught it in mide air crabbing to back feild, then actually breaking the stick!!!! Pluse that night we got best percussion in our class and 3rd best percussion over all!!! while were on the subject of breaking sticks there a bass in the line who seems to break a pair of mallets every week, his my best friend but his stupied and one of the worse players in the line, but still he beats the stuffing out of the drum and the rims, and always at the wrong time. Which gives ua a problem of never having extra sticks, hence now we have to buy our sticks. well I'm done BUY!!!!

DRUMMER GIRLS ROCK!!!!

BANG IT, DANG IT!!!

Just about everyone on our bassline last year popped a head off at least one mallet, kinda strange, that hasn't happened much before then or after then, even when those members play bass again.

We use innovatives so we don't usually have a problem with mallets breaking, and the only time one broke was on tour in New Mexico we were using really old mallets cause it was supposed to rain that day and we didn't want to mess up our practice mallets any more. And Bass 3's mallets weren't even taped, so about 3/4 of the way through the day, he broke his mallet after the latin section of the show (he was purposely hitting harder than he should have to break it on purpose). But the proper technique for rim clicks is always 3" heights. Just look at the cadets 2003 drum solo, no matter what height you hit it at, you're still going to hear it throughout the whole stadium.

Oh wow.
We've had the same mallets for years and years and years.
Actually one of the mallets I used this past season was swelled from a junior dropping it in a puddle his freshman year.
The instructors always caustion us not to hit the rim clicks too hard so they don't break.
Our school's kind of ghetto in the music department.
Actually, a lot of the mallets are splintering at the top part from rim clicks and being retaped so much.
They'll probably break soon.

not only do big bass drummers break mallets, but they also break more drumheads that the top basses do
