Our bass line broke a mallet in half only once. It really depends on how many rim clicks you so, and how hard you do them. I'm not sure what kind of mallets you use, but usually most brands are pretty sturdy.

I don't think I've ever seen a non-defective bass mallet shaft break from normal playing -- if it survived the first 1/2 hour or so of playing, the first thing that died was the felt ball.
Of course, my alma mater and the other high schools near my home town weren't, and still aren't, really into bass drum rim clicks.

So it must be a flaw with how Innovative makes them, unless our bass line is throwing them around like a football, They used to do that, but i havent seen them do it in a while.

Now see, my line used to use Innovative and we never had problems except for the occasional stick break from never retaping and hitting way to hard. I mean, who's really going to hear a rim click anyway. This year we switched to Vic Firth and our bass 1 mallet heads popped off. Bass 5 broke two mallets, and I, bass 4, broke 1 in the stands and it flew into the endzone of the field.

I've only ever broken seen one bass mallet broken in my few years of marching percussion. It was my mallet, and when I got it at the beginning of the season it was already pretty splintered (we weren't well funded, and most of our funding was going to the band trip to Hawaii) so I used that one. I broke it on the rim (with a rim guard) during the cadence at a football game. It kinda sucked playing the rest of the cadence with one mallet, but it worked out well enough. The only real problem I had was the 32nd note splits in the bass solo, so I just played a one-handed triple stroke.  I played 2nd bass, if that has any relevance.
