Our bass line broke a mallet in half only once. It really depends on how many rim clicks you so, and how hard you do them. I'm not sure what kind of mallets you use, but usually most brands are pretty sturdy.

Our line is using Innovatives, and the only way any mallets have broken is I believe the heads popping off of our first bass's mallets once or twice. Other than that, the things are pretty tough. We do have rim savers, but we also double-wrap the tape for a few inches below the head of the mallet to protect it more on the rim clicks. Don't know if anyone does that, but it's worth a shot to help the sticks live longer. I normally re-tape my show mallets before every game, but the practice mallets can go two or three weeks and not take too much wear until I retape them again.

I've only broke two pair, a pair of cheap ones made from like partical board or something I had broke because I had a habbit of doing really hard rim clicks. The other pair I broke were made of steel and I'm not sure what happened to them, I was actually playing fairly soft on the head of the drum and it snapped in half and pierced the old Remo head we had on there.

I don't think I've ever seen a non-defective bass mallet shaft break from normal playing -- if it survived the first 1/2 hour or so of playing, the first thing that died was the felt ball.

Of course, my alma mater and the other high schools near my home town weren't, and still aren't, really into bass drum rim clicks.

We use the same things and have the same problems, we taped them, and the tape is staying on relatively well becasue our bass ilne doesn't smack the rims too often, but we do need to get rim guards... But anywho. The mallet eads popped off on our bass 2 mallets, and they're almost brand new mallets. So it must be a flaw with how Innovative makes them, unless our bass line is throwing them around like a football, They used to do that, but i havent seen them do it in a while.

Now see, my line used to use Innovative and we never had problems except for the occasional stick break from never retaping and hitting way to hard. I mean, who's really going to hear a rim click anyway. This year we switched to Vic Firth and our bass 1 mallet heads popped off. Bass 5 broke two mallets, and I, bass 4, broke 1 in the stands and it flew into the endzone of the field.

I've only ever broken seen one bass mallet broken in my few years of marching percussion. It was my mallet, and when I got it at the beginning of the season it was already pretty splintered (we weren't well funded, and most of our funding was going to the band trip to Hawaii) so I used that one. I broke it on the rim (with a rim guard) during the cadence at a football game. It kinda sucked playing the rest of the cadence with one mallet, but it worked out well enough. The only real problem I had was the 32nd note splits in the bass solo, so I just played a one-handed triple stroke. I played 2nd bass, if that has any relevance.

During one practice the 5th bass hit a rimshot and the head of the mallet flew off and almost hit a tenor in the head lol

Last night was our last football game, so the guys went a little crazy and broke two pairs. I gave mine to our bottom bass, and ended up having to play with the 2nd bass mallets. The top three all had to play with tenor felts.

They were all promark sticks, by the way. Promark's wood just doesn't hold up well.
