It's been a long time since I played bass, but as I recall the thing that really breaks bass mallets is overzealous rim clicks. That tends to break the mallet and the rim (unless there's a rim guard). Take it easy on the rim clicks and bass mallets last a long long time. Or until you use them in the rain and the felt heads get all swollen and weird looking.

If you broke a brand new mallet, either the mallet was bad or you did something dumb with it.

I agree. The mallet must have been bad.

Bad mallet or bad technique.

Yeah... the fourth bass drum in our line isn't what you'd call the sharpest tool in the shed. For a long time we had some really old crappy bass mallets the bassline was using, and this year the third bass drum's dad was awesome and he bought the whole bassline brand new mallets. Not even a week after receiving them, the fourth bass snaps 'em at a football game. We were ticked at him. That kid just plays too aggressively.

at Yesterday's game, our 5th AND 6th basses both broke a mallet. Luckily it's the end of the season, so they're just using old ones.

We're sponsored by promark, so we use their bass mallets. They produce the best sound in my opinion, but the wood they're made out of is too soft. We've broken probably 4 or 5 mallets this season. I'd try Innovative. We were sponsored by them my freshman year when we had a different director, and their bass mallets are invincible. Our 6th bass doesn't know how to play any lower than 15 inches off the head, and he's only broken 1 pair. It's impressive how long they last.

Geesh... How hard are you guys playing bass? We've had the same pairs of mallets for the past 3 years. Lack of funding has cut down on our "all out" playing but still...It might just be me, and I think it is, but that seems like an awful lot of mallets to be broken in one year.

ive broken two this year. the old ones the school has had for about 50 years. and the new ones. and our bass 3 broke one. its not our fault most songs we play in the stands have simple grooves and soo when evenever we play with the band we have tons of stick clicks

Most bigger bass drums do end up breaking mallets because the more weight on the end. I'm usually playing 1 or 2 but this year I played 4. I'm still in the process of breaking one of mine as our instructor is constantly have us retape our sticks. I'm just waiting for our combined half-time with the Jr. High.

Can you really hear rim clicks anyway? I mean how hard must you really hit it?
