First of all, it doesn't matter...it's not a matter of beating a certain amount of people, it's a matter of being one of the best. If there is 500 people, who cares, because its likely 490 of them aren't very good. You just need to knowif you are one of the the top 4 or 5...numbers mean nothing.
And second of all, all colleges, at least from what i've heard from friends from VT, and OSU, normally have upwards of 40 snares, 20 tenors or something try out. It's quite a bit.
But again keep in mind it doesn't matter how many people there, because a lot of drum staff would rather have 6 snares that are decent, then 8 where 2 can't hack it. (this is of course a horrible estimate for college bands as they tend to want to be loud)
