I currently have the Yamaha Field Corps Large sextet (which I love), and I am currently tuning my two 6" spocks to different piches, as I would assume is the norm. Most of the parts I'm playing require 6 different sounds, however, the lower sound of the 6" spock sounds hollow, and lacks projection.

I know that Yamaha sells all of their tenor drums individually, and I was wondering if there was any advice to say wether I would be able to buy an 8" tom and be able to mount it in the left spock position? I assume all it would take would be the mounting bracket (which I already have because the 6" tom is already mounteed on it now). However, I'm not sure wether the space would allow for it.

Any sugestions?

you could always cut one of the 6 inch shells on an angle to get more projection

with what you have you can not fit a 8" drum on the rail. You would have to modify or purchase the XL rail that Cavies use. Either way there is a lot of drilling involved. Randall May(Yamaha's carrier maker) has tested a new rail with Bluecoats and Crossmen this past summer which will allow a 6"8" combo. Unfortunately it's not released yet.

While it won't give you the sound difference an 8" drum would, you could look into using different head combinations on your spocks to get a different sound from each drum.

Thomm's right. The 8" is probably not going to fit unless you've got a band parent who is fairly creative with a drill. Your best bet is to wait until Randall May markets the new rail for all to buy and I'm willing to bet it won't be inexpensive.

It doesn't matter how well you tune a 6" spock...they're just not big enough to project a lot of sound. If I'm writing a chart for outdoor I generally reserve spock drums for timing purposes only. They're just too hard to hear and the sound gets lost on a football field. Indoor is a different story. You're not trying to push your sound through the overtones of 30 trumpets and, well, your indoors.

Cutting the drums at an angle does NOT get a better projection. Ralph Hardimon told us at USMs drum camp that he created that to look like it was louder. It creates absolutely no change in sound.

You might be right with that one on angling the shell, but if you drill 2" holes close to the batter head it will increase the projection or "attack" of the drum. This I know for sure. We did that on our sets. you can hear the difference between the two spocks.

Many different things you can do to get different sounds from a double 6, head selection is the easiest. shell length as well as the vents I talked about..

Thanks for the imput guys...

One of you spoke of an "XL rail" Is that actually made by XL, or is it just a bigger one made by Yamaha?

The Dynasty cradle is not adaptable to other brands at this time.. unless he wants to re drill for Dynasty lugs..

I have 2 6" spocks on my Yamaha's and for the highest pitch drum I cut a 1 inch hole on the side of the shell. It really helped with pitch between the 2 drums.

If I remember correctly too, I think I've seen a 1" hole drilled in the side of one of the spocks on Cadet's sets of tenors. If I recall correctly.

Make a mini sound projector that is velco'ed on. And put it on the spock drum for added sound.

To clarify, projectors do not "add" sound they change the sounds direction.."projecting" it forward...which would be useless with a spock considering it would force the sound into drums 1 and 2..the 1" hole method is the best it makes the drum have more attack.. but it does sound thinner..

Yes, Yamaha drills holes in the spocks for their corps that get custom drums. My school recently purchased the Crossmen's drums from 2005-2006 and the spock shells have the 1" holes in them. They are also cut to different lengths. The one on the left is slightly deeper than the one on the right.

I was at the cavies camp and of course they had the 8" and 6" spocks on the XL hardware. Needless to say ALL the hardware is different. Ive always wanted to do that, but it seems like a costly process.
