Split rims

My school, and tons others for that matter, has black Yamaha drums. During last weeks band camp while our bass 3 was setting her drum down I happened to notice that one of her rims had split. We are very careful with our drums, setting them on harnesses (to keep covers from ripping) and such when put down. I am wondering, could the heat have caused the rim to split? As it was hot and we were on turf, and the drums are black. Anyone else had this problem? PS. We know only 1 was split at the time as we checked. But later we were inside and the same drum fell off of the cheap blue stadium hardware and split the other rim. What luck.

Rim Savers. They're like 20 bucks max for a pair and they're good for rim clicks and saving rims.

We do, on one side because for some reason the old director didn't buy enough for both. But also, the side with the rim saver, it split right at the edge of it.
We got these drums two years ago, but I suppose it was just some freak accident or something.

I've had problems with Yamaha rims splitting before, even without any damage from rim clicks. I've even had one that was split right out of the box! A little wood glue plus a screwed-on rim saver fixes 'em up pretty well. A "mending plate" available from most hardware stores works just as well, but doesn't give you any protection from rim clicks.

ya. my junior high got brand new Yamaha drums my last year, and as we un packed them bass 1 had a bbroken rim. and we had to buy another one.they wouldnt send us a new one. but as a temp fix we just had the shop teacher kinda glue it together. that worked till it broke again, but in a seperate spot. maybe Yamaha just doesnt have good rims

We haven't had any experience with broken rims on Magnolia's new Yamaha's [purchased last fall], but our old set had several split rims... basically we pressed the rim back together, and positioned the damaged spot under one of the claws. Probably not the best idea, but they have yet to seperate again.
